Hi all,
I have a query.
My wife has been offered a job with a company who is opening their first office in the UK.
As she will be the first employee in UK they want to make her a home-based employee and also wants to use our residence address as registered UK address of the company.
I was wondering if it’s possible to use residence as a business premises or how it’s going to affect us (Bills, Council Tax, Insurance)....
Please guide us.
Gari.

Yes its possible.
As long as one room is not used solely for business it won't effect your council tax or capital gains tax when you sell your home.
Check with your home insurer, most are cool about admin work, having business visitors to your home could be an issue as would public liability insurance.
You may be able to claim some bills (heating, electric) as a business expense for tax purposes but check the position if you want to do this regarding council tax.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I would carefully research the company before allowing them to do this.
This means that your private residence will be on all their headed paper, advertising, bills, invoices etc etc. There is nothing to stop potential clients or even people to whom they owe money turning up on your doorstep.
I would be questioning why they cannot set up a business address other than your home. After all you can 'rent' a correspandance address for next to nothing these days quite legitimately.
Be very careful about the amount you look to claim against business expenses or you could find yourself with a bill from the local council for business rates. You will need to inform your insurer that you are working from home. I would then claim an agreed amount for 'expenses' from the company directly to go towards the bills.

Me too andrew. What on earth happens if she wants to get another job elsewhere? I presume this is for some sort of tax evasion practices. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
You will incur business rates on your council tax if you do this.
Your address will be listed for all to see at companies house.
All correspondence will need to show this address as the registered company address.
I would avoid this at all costs as it smells distinctly fishy to me!Treat others as you would like to be treated :A0 -

Eeeeek!!
I agree with previous posters .... look very carefully at this. Ask 'em to set-up a PO Box No. address. It has taken about 4,500,000,000 (4.5 billion) years for the Earth to form as it is now .........
and it'll only take about another 100 years for mankind to really **** it up!!!!0 -
Sounds like a scam. First office in UK, I guess they are established somewhere else? You could do some research. Possibly simply entering their name into Yahoo / Google would generate useful info."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

I'm with the others, something doesn't seem quite right. If its all above board, whats stopping them using their solicitors address as the registered address?0

Thanks all,
Andrew, I was not aware that you can rent a correspondence address.
Can you please tell me how its done and I will ask my wife to suggest them this route.

Think you'll find these companies in the Yellow Pages. They're usually just a business set-up to take mail/parcels/faxes for individuals/smaller companies.
Out of interest, what's the name of the Company your wifey will be working for .... it 'sounds' a bit iffy, but would like to do some research to see if I, or anyone else who reads this, can find out anything about them.It has taken about 4,500,000,000 (4.5 billion) years for the Earth to form as it is now .........

many companies use their accountants office as the registered office. why cant they do this? think it sounds very dodgy.0
