Now now I am not that desperate for windows media player on linux
Neither am I, so I won't let it on this system.
I quite like mplayer - mind you I have found different media players work better with different types of media files - there are a few niggles I have about VLC but overall it seems to be the best one around.
Yep. mplayer struggled with some HD content earlier today, while VLC managed it just fine.
Sorry to go off topic OP.

Its just the plugin you need to make microsoft embeded video to play - MS silverlight might be that plugin I am not sure exactly. Specially its needed for firefox (or probably any browser other than IE).
Well the open source equivalent (Moonlight) is what allowed me to play that video, so presumably that is correct?Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Ooer learnt something knew
- seems to be equivalent for everything in linux now (improve the file managers and openoffice and its totally more stable than windows - gets boring though having no problems to sort out). Google OS coming out soon.
Sorry OP - gone off topic here - hope your problem is sorted.0 -
I got the moonlight plugin to work on firefox within Ubuntu according to the moonlight plugin test page. I am sure there is more to playing back this stuff. I keep getting a generic page that tells me to download a windows plugin even though I am not using windows.

You may well need this package?

Also maybe make sure you have totem with it's mozilla plugin installed? With the MS codecs installed, that seems to be able to handle WM content.
That is from Mandriva rather than ubuntu, but I assume you must be able to achieve the same?Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

For ubuntu I always install the gstreamer plugins which then allow playback of almost all video formats.0

The Novell Moonlight Firefox plugin seemed to be what was needed to play the page within Firefox. I had to turn off all other plugins that were capaple of handling the material so it could be given a chance.

Hmmm. it seems that our ruling elite (assuming parliament.uk is a government website) don't approve of OpenSource...
They seem to have bottled out of actually putting in the final option...

That port25.technet.com link was useless in my experience.
