so I took the car along to kwik fit. They carried out a free inspection

There's a reason they offer a free inspection....

I need to replace both the front brake disc and pads and bot the rear brake discs and pads as there grinding together.

There you go!! can you see why they offer a Free Inspection now???

For goodness sake give Kwik Fit a wide berth unless you WANT to get fleeced at every visit.
  • If what Kwik Fit are saying is in fact correct, then you would've needed disks and pads anyway - as others have said, the MOT is not a guarantee that the car will be safe and serviceable for a further 12mths. They do however usually advise for items that would require attention before the next MOT.

    Personal view shared with others:
    • get a second opinion, your only recourse then would be to contact VOSA (details on the MOT form). Unless you've drive your car for hundreds of miles with the grinding noise, then I doubt you could've saved the discs.
    • if KF are correct, get other quotes over the phone to save hawking the car around - all reputable garages will tell you that if you need new discs, you should also change the pads at the same time for best braking efficiency.

free movement would be the caliper slides
as i said if they can see the pad material they can fail it but you cant mot a car and rely on it not needing pads for a year
i have done about 2000 miles since my last mot and will need pads soon
  • so I took the car along to kwik fit

im surprised thats all they said needed doing!

usually its tyres, discs, pads, exhaust.
  • I was advised at my recent M.O.T. that both front tyres would probably need replacing by next test but were both fine & legal for now (so I am continuing to use them as they are). This was a Honda dealership who did M.O.T. btw - and, yes, the car is a Honda too, with a mere £32K on the clock from new, so I have no reason whatsoever to suspect that they do not know what they're talking about there!
  • Our other car, a Vauxhall, with only 38K miles on the clock from new, was M.O.T.'d and serviced by Kwik Fit recently and apparently needed 2 tyres to get through (which, of course, we agreed to) - this was only a week or two earlier than the Honda and both cars are being driven regularly by the same person, i.e. me - so maybe there is some truth in the allegations about KF doing unnecessary but chargeable work to boost sales. Shall bear this in mind and get a second opinion at an independent next time work of the nature available from KF needs doing on either car so thanks for the "heads up" on this scam.

My Civic was MOT'd in 2008 by the Honda main dealer I bought it from brand new, passed but with four advisories of which one was for front tyres being near the limit.

Put two new tyres on for this year and did nothing else, this time passed by a good reliable local garage with no advisories, so where the other three went that the Honda garage found is a mystery.

Interesting stuff ............. so the £15 fuel additive (to clean the engine) they suggested, and which I declined, was probably not necessary either then would you say? Remember the car in question has only done 32K miles from new - and this is now my 8th car, none of which have needed this and been none the worse for it mechanically.

I have now stopped using a main agent for service as like you have found they always seem to try and sell extras that I personally thought where unnecessary, an example being although I always topped up my washer fluid before any service and knew it was full I would still be charged for a bottle which they left and claimed was needed, small things but if they charge every customer it all adds up to nice little extra earner.

My Civic is now seven years old and has only done 55K but I am not prepared to pay main agent prices for service on a car of that age when I have local independent garage who has a good reputation and is nearly half the price of a main agent.
