MOT 6 Weeks ago - Now need new brake pads and discs

Hi,

I had my MOT 6 weeks ago and I needed to purchase a replacement tyre.

Today when driving I had the most loud grinding noise, so I took the car along to kwik fit. They carried out a free inspection and have said I need to replace both the front brake disc and pads and bot the rear brake discs and pads as there grinding together.

I mentioned I had my MOT carried out 6 weeks ago at another well know car center, and he was quite surprised none of this was picked up on.

Does anyone know if I have any comeback on the center that carried out the MOT? Maybe if this was picked up 6 weeks ago, I might only needed to have replaced the pads instead of the discs.

Firstly the MOT was six weeks ago and only means that on that day the vehicle was roadworthy.

Secondly for goodness sake do not go to Kwik Fit they are infamous for changing things that do not need doing especially where brakes are concerned, get a second opinion from a local garage, preferably recommended, it is quite possible that you may only need new pads fitting.

    In short "No"

The MOT place would have decided your car would pass the MOT with no work on it 6 weeks ago.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Definitely don't trust Kwik Fit to do all that work without a second opinion first.

I doubt you have any comeback on the MoT place because too much time has passed.

Also, if you got the problem addressed as soon as you heard the grinding, e.g. you drove it almost straight to a garage, then the disks should have been ok anyway, as in my experience they don't get ruined on the first few applications of the brakes when there's insufficient material on the pads, it does take a while. So maybe they needed replacing anyway? Changing disks every second brake change is about normal to some...

MOT's do not check the pads
as long as the brakes are applying sufficient braking force equally accross the wheels then it will pass
the MOT testers do not remove the wheels as part of the MOT
MOT's are not a replacement for servicing

get a 2nd opinion on the brakes as kwikfitup will try and upsell every time
if KF are saying you need front and rear discs then i will bet they are wrong
  • Kwik Fit insist on changing the pads and disks together (they have caught me out like that before_ - chances are you take it elsewhere and they will just need to change the pads and save you a considerable amount of money.

Kwik Fit and the brake scam still going i see, i had a terrible griding noise in my brakes & Kwik Fit said i needed new pads and disks at a cost of £300 , this was on a Sunday and the only place open, took it into lmy local garage on Monday and there was just a stone stuck in the brakes cost £0
  • I knew someone who worked at Kwik Fit and he told me some right stories of how they would do "EXTRA WORK" that was not necessary needed but extra charge to the customer. It wasn't his choice do do this but they were all under pressure from there manager to do this.
By the way, he did not work long for them and was glad to leave
  • I was quoted over £400 for the rear brakes & calipers on my car.

I decided against it and took to a local garage thats been open for as far back as i remember & they charged £330 for the rears and the fronts and an oil change.

    Pays to shop around.
