My first car boot - are my prices right?

I will be doing my first car boot tomorrow morning in Dorking (a very big cull of my wardbrobe and attic).

I have come up with a list of these prices (most of my things are no older than 2 years i would say and i have printed the prices out in big to stick on the front of the table rather than price individually - there is 9 big ikea bags full):

- Suits £2- £5
- Jackets/ Coats - £2-£5
- Shoes £1.50
- Bags 50p - £1.50
- Tops 50p
- Trousers/ Jeans £1
- Jumpers 50p - £1
- Dresses 50p - £3.50
- Skirts 50p - £1.50
- Shirts £1
- New/ With labels 50p - £5
I have also put a sign saying `offers and bulk buy offers welcome'

Do you think they are about right?

Does anyone have any advice for me?
I have LOADS of carrier bags, about £30 of change (and a bum bag to keep it in) and the most important a big flask for tea!!

Any advice/ comments really appreciated :D

  • yeah i think thats pretty good!!!
You may walk and you may run
You leave your footprints all around the sun
And every time the storm and the soul wars come
    You just keep on walking
  • not too much tea though....
Be flexible when you can. If you want to do another one if things are not selling or if you find people are not wanting to pay as much for certain items. I think your prices are very fair. The sign should also work wonders...Good luck...

Wear an extra pair of socks too!! When you're stood still for a period of time, your feet start to go numb....!!!
But as billionaire says, be flexible - everyone wants a bargain - and if you manage to sell two pairs of jeans for £1.50, then it's money in your pocket (or bumbag!!) and less for you to take back home...!!
Why does nobody say Thank You anymore??

  • The last time i did a car boot sale i was opposite two stalls that sold clothes. one had everything hanging neatly on a rail and the other had the clothes in a pile on the floor (on a sheet). Although a few people looked through the rails, far more people were on their knees looking through the clothes on the floor. i was amazed! Almost all the clothes on the floor were sold whilst the rail remained full. might be worth seperating the clothes by price and putting them in boxes for people to have a rummage.
  • I must admit im more drawn to a big messy pile rather than a nice neat rail..lol

Me, too! I always assume clothes on hangers are going to be too expensive and I adore a good rummage!
  • I have been doing boot sales for years and your prices seem good, sometimes items that you think will sell don't and vice versa.
I normally have a rail and also boxes which hold 50p and £1 items and then have a blanket on the floor for 25p items or 5 4 a £1.
I do about 6-8 a year and end up with about £650-£850 which is fab!

try not to drink tooooo much tea or you will have to use a portaloo...so make sure you pack some toilet roll...:-)
  • i've never bothered pricing items up when i'm doing car boots. Just wait for people to ask you, then say a price, get bartered down by 25p and let them have it.

One tip - take lots of carrier bags too! It's always handy and helpful to offer bags to customers if they buy a few items.

If it's a large item, offer to keep it held back until closing time - get payment first and maybe use raffle ticket/cloakroom ticket books?
