We bought some pork ribs a couple of weeks ago, but OH said they weren't like the ones he used to eat when he was younger. Is there a difference between pork ribs and bacon ribs? Where can I get bacon ribs from?
Also what's the best way to cook them, OH thinks they should be boiled but I think maybe they should be done in the oven? what about slow cooker?

Bacon is cured pork so I would imagine that bacon ribs are just pork ribs cured. I've never seen them though.0

I always thought that pork ribs were the ones that were marinated and then cooked in the oven.

Bacon ribs were the one treat I used to look forward to as a kid when we back to see our relatives in Manchester. My great uncle would go to the local supermarket for us the day before and get huge bags of ribs. They were cured (salted) and we used to take them home and cook them in the pressure cooker. The meat was salty and sticky and utterly gorgeous.0 -
In Ireland we call bacon ribs "spare ribs" and every butcher sells them. My mother used to boil them with veg until the meat was falling off the bone. I have cooked them by boiling until meat is soft, allowing to cool, smoother in BBQ sauce and finish in the oven.0

My dads' specialty was "Bacon Bone Soup" - bacon ribs boiled in water with onions, loads of red lentils (or split peas, yellow or green) and few black peppercorns - Absolutely scrumptious
. As kids, we would argue over the bones with the most meat on - the bones would become so soft you could gnaw them right down to nothing :rotfl:. I still make it now - OH had never heard of it and was a little dubious at first, but now he loves it too.

Sometimes OH cooks his soup with ham ribs instead of a shank and its delicious. Usually we pick out the ribs and big chunks of potato and have that as a lunch one day leaving the soup as a vegetable soup cooked in a ham stock.
The local butchers sell them but only over the weekend and Morrisons sell them all week here in Scotland.0 -
Has to be " bacon ribs" if my mum sent me to butchers when I was a kid she always siad " bring em pork ribs and you will be taking them back " lol

Gorgeous. Bacon ribs very different to pork ribs. Local butchers and markets sell in the manchester area probably because high numbers of irish families . Lovely dish but sadly no longer cheap . I have spent believe it or not the same amount to buy a sheet of ribs as I have for joint of meat. (but sooooooooo worth it!);)0

If you're cooking bacon ribs in the pressure cooker, you need to be careful as they're not covered with water and could be more salty than when boiled.
They can be brought to the boil and simmered on the hob, but you need to keep an eye on them as the water evaporates quickly - especially as there is salt in them.
I find the best way is to do them in the Slow Cooker, now that I've got one.
I used to do something that I called 'Bacon Bone Stew' by including chunks of potatoes, onions, carrots and some shredded green cabbage. The potatoes should 'fall' to thicken the stew naturally.
The price of Bacon Ribs is so ridiculous now, that I tend to use a Ham/Gammon Shank instead to make the above meal.

He's from liverpool and comes up with these bizarre dishes that a southern fairy like me has never heard of, so in a word yes. I do my best but often get it wrong....nothing will ever measure up to his (sadly departed) nan's cooking.
