I am getting married in August! What is your budget? A full meal for 300 people will be crazy expensive! It is hard to do something like this cheap in London.

The registry offices my partner and I looked at were Kings Road in Chelsea (a number of people mentioned this one to us with good reviews), Marylebone high Street, and Islington on Upper Street. We chose Islington because we just wanted a small room and it was the cheapest. They have rooms holding up to a couple of hundred people though. We looked at venues that were licensed to hold marriages that were not churches and they cost a bomb. You need to pay a lot just for the venue hire of a licensed venue then pay a few extra hundred quid on top for the registrar to go there, by far it is a lot cheaper to do a registry office.

One place that is licensed if you do want a licensed venue so you get married in front of your 300 friends then party on at the same place is Trafalgar Tavern in Greenwich. I have only been there for a Sunday lunch but it was very good. It was a bit out of our price range though.

What we have organised is a £15 per head BBQ at a pub on the Thames called The Gun (we are having 100 people) in the docklands. They are pretty slack in responding to us at times, but other places we looked at were even worse. It has been a nightmare because places like pubs which are not proper function venues are not very organised businesses it seems.

Definitely the cheapest thing but the most work is hiring a hall and doing your own catering. I guess it would depend on how many good friends you have that would be happy to work rather than party at your do. We want people to enjoy themselves that is why we have gone the catered route.

PM if you want to know how our day goes in August. Good luck!

How about this? Licenced for ceremonies, has good in-house catering (Searcy's are fab) and is weatherproof!

how about looking at the canal museum, they have venue hire, they donlt have an alcohol licence but you buy the booze from the pub next door and they take it to the venue, so I suppose that would only work if you were thinking of buying all the drink yourself, or you could hire a boat on the thames. Prices are very reasonable. Congratulations by the way x

I found the Canal Museum incredibly disappointing. It was like a community centre, but with dated exhibits. Yes, the price was great, but it all felt a bit naff, which is a shame given the location and that the building *could* be really nice.

    Hi

I looked at the barbican, but its just too pricey for us. I do love the building, OH reckons its spooky which is the main reason why i like it :)

I did think that about the canal museum thought it looked a bit, well, tatty.

Im certainly not dealing with ordering caterers etc, I want it all kinda under one roof type thing.

60 people for the sit down meal and then up to 300 for the buffet is my estimate, although im considering slicing quite a few people out looking at what it costs. But as we are such social beings it is going to be tough cutting back on numbers :(

Why don't you look at hiring a community hall? Marquee companies hire out just the lining if that's all you need. Makes it look a little more special and you can easily personalise the chairs and tables..............

If your not religious why get married at all? Surely it's a religious ceremony which is a bit hypocritical and pointless if your not religious.

Because we want to be legally linked to each other forever. We are having a humanist cermony :)

Thanks for the suggestions for venues guys, I am definatley against having a community hall, organising the caterers, making sure everyones doing what they are doing. Just on this one day, I dont really want to "organise" anything :D
