... My boyfriend is half cast and has afro curly hair and it isnt untidy or matted. He has asked if there is any other reason why they dont want him to work in the daytime and he is just told its because of his hair. My question is, is this discrimination? and is there anything he can do about it?

I think that the next question would have to be what would he have to do to his hair in order to be allowed to work days.

This certainly begins to look like discrimination, but not sufficiently at this stage to be confident of making anything stick. I would advise he just keeps a diary for the moment and he asks the question I suggest and sees how things pan out. After a while some other issues may come out or he could just do the job right, please the customers and generally make the issue go away. On the whole, if there is a petty discrimination issue and the person overcomes that with their personality, this is by far the best outcome. If there is discrimination, he is at least being given a chance.

In this situation I'd be more worried about having a girlfriend who called me "half caste" than what my employer's saying!

OK, the terminology is not PC, but if Delilah is not bothered in herself about these racial distinctions, I can see that the non PC description can be used in all innocence
    Definitely a wind up!
It has not gone off track so far and it is an interesting question. Although I think it is genuine, I would not be upset if it was just hypothetical.
"Erudite" from someone using the expression "half caste"? Can trolls be erudite?
Does this need a Venn diagram?

  • Im sorry if I offended you all with the use of the word 'half cast' my boyfriend often uses that phrase, and him or his family and friends some of which are also 'children of mixed heritage' have never expressed a problem with it.

Im a bit shocked actually, I came on this forum to ask for advice and apart from a few helpful comments, for which I am grateful for, I have been attacked. So thanks for that! I don't understand why you would think I would come on here just to make something up!

    !

Some black people use the "n word" to describe themselves; doesn't make it appropriate for anybody else to use!

Is he being asked to cover his hair for hygiene reasons? or because they don't like the style? or because it is untidy? If it is any of these then those reasons could equally apply to any person of any colour so it is not discrimination. Maybe his colour is relevant, maybe it is not, but it irks me when the assumption is automatically made.

You have not given enough info for us to be able to judge, that may be because you wanted us to jump one way or the other with our opinions, it may be because you dont have any more info, or it may be because this is a wind up!!!

So,in the absence of concrete info, and working on the assumption that they have not stated it is because his hair shows his afro caribbean heritage and they dislike that, then no, it is not discrimination.

I still think this is a wind up!! but will reserve judgement till you come back with more info.

    I have my suspitions too.

Talking of half cast, I remember a chap who used to live near my granny who was from bangladesh, my granny always refered to him as 'the dusky chap accross the road' whenevery he was talked about. PMSL.
When dealing with the CSA its important to note that it is commonly accepted as unfit for purpose, and by default this also means the staff are unfit for purpose.

All they have said to him is that they dont like his hair, they havent asked him to cover it, they wont elaborate. His manager doesnt have a problem with it, it is the lady who owns the petrol station who he hasnt actually met. My boyfriend himself suggested that it may be a racial problem, i was just reiterating what he said to me, again apologises for offending anyone.
