Can't work in daytime because of hair

How do you know this is what she is saying?
that is not how I read it.
I read it the same way as DVardysShadow...The "Very stupid" (first 2 words of the post) part made me read it that way.
It's a highly dodgy work policy, but there could be some truth in it, especially if he's a big bloke (though not necessarily because of his skin colour). Perhaps the manager wants a quasi-bouncer, and is using the guy's hair as a flimsy excuse to change his shifts
.
Either way, it remains a very bizarre situation.£1 / 50p 2011 holiday flight + hotel expenses = £98.50/£600
HSBC 8% 12mth regular savings = £80 out of a maximum remaining allowance of £2500
"3 months' salary" reserve = £00 / £3600 :eek:0 -

To me, it read that people regularly treat/react to black people in this way i.e with "suspicion".0 -
Use of the word black to describe I feel is not a problem as long as it is not used in a derogatory manner such as black b******
I mean the MOBO's are what? Music of0 -
People on here are bizarre. I'm half Indian, half English and I am considered by my friends and family, as well as myself, to be 'Half Caste'. It's not at all offensive, it's what I am.
As for the troll accusations, I'm really sorry that someone has come looking for advice to be vitriolled and ridiculed by other members. If you can't help someone, or think the poster is a troll, why not just read another thread and not bother posting. For everyone's sake.I'll have some cheese please, bob.0 -
There are two conversations going on, mizzbiz. One is offering advice to Delilah666, the other is about the use of language. You've just contributed to the 'use of language' one.0

I have read the thread from the beginning thanks. I don't get why you went to the effort to post that, considering the numerous posts before mine are discussing what I commented on.

I personally know of a case of someone with the same heritage as you who made an offical complaint when they were referred to in that way.
ONW worked in the same environment as I do, so is probably coming from the same standpoint. Just becasuse you personally do not find it offensive does not mean others will not. People need to err on the side of caution in this litinginous age.
With regard to your troll comment, see my previous post for why it is important for some people to challenge what they see as spurious posts.0 -
As an former employment lawyer who did a lot of discrimination work, who grew up with a family member of 'dual heritage' I can see both sides of the coin.
But certainly in an employment context, it is a foolish employer who turns a blind eye to potentially offensive remarks based on an employee's racial characteristics. You have to bear in mind that what is considered as offensive is decided by the person on the receiving end of the comment - if they find the comment offensive, then it is. Also, it isn't just the employer who can be taken to tribunal, but the person who has made the remark complained of, and that person can personally be ordered to pay compensation. So it is in everyone's interests that procedures and training are put in place to avoid these situations cropping up in the first place.
From a personal point of view, my relative has never taken offence at any casual remark, as long as it is said without malice. As far as he is concerned it is like saying 'the guy with the blue eyes' or the person with blonde hair. But remember we grew up before the race relations act. When it was not unusual for him to be unable to go to a particular bar because 'coloureds' were barred, and shops would have notices in their windows saying 'no asians'. So I guess we know what it is like for him to be discriminated against in a very open and (then) acceptable way. The anger at that prejudice stayed with me and influenced my decision in later life to take a special interest in discrimination law.
Times have moved on, thank goodness. I suppose the point of this ramble is that whatever might be acceptable within family and friendship groups is a matter for them, but in the wider world, we have to raise the bar to avoid offending people and consequently to stay on the right side of the law.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0
