It seems that people are more intrested in the fact you might be a 'troll' (whatever that is) than helping you with your question. I don't see why you'd ask a perfectly reasonable question if you are a 'troll'.

I'd also like to add that i use the word half cast?... whats the problem with it?

I'm guessing they would rather him work evenings than day times, as theres more people in on the sunday day time than evening.

To be honest i agree in saying thats discriminating.. is there someone in charge of his boss?.. like is it a chain petrol station?.. if there is he should defintly talk with them.. if not maybe contact the careers advice beauro or a union.

To be honest i can't believe how pathetic and childish some people can be on this forum.
If you think the OP is a 'troll', simple move on from this thread and don't post in it. Ignore the OP and get on with your life.

The problem is that if everyone does as you say and doesn't call it as they see it, then those who do indulge in this type of behaviour will proliferate and the forum will be even more overun with this type of post than it currently is.

Troll posts occur more frequently than you may believe, when you have been around longer you will see this to be true. If the forum degenerates in that fashion it will lose the essence of what it was set up to be. Also, as there are very many caring people on here it is usual to find people respond with advice in sometimes long and detailed posts. To then realise it is a troll means they have wasted their time, and in will probably hesitate to bother again when the question is genuine.

So, if you wish to do as you advocate that is fine, the rest of us will also make a personal decision whether to respond or not, and whether to respond and say what we think. That is the essence of a forum, differences of opinion, and expressing those opinions.

Getting back to the issue you raised, get him to write down exactly what was said and when. Then I would suggest he asks the manager why his hair is seen as a problem in the day and not at night and I would write down the answers very carefully - dated and timed.
Feed back here on what the response was.

That was the purpose of my earlier suggestion in writing a letter. The point is to establish exactly what the problem is and therefore to ascertain whether this is related to his racial features, or some other issue. (Maybe they feel his blue spiked hairstyle is putting off daytime customers, but are not so worried about the quieter night-time shift ;))

It is just possible it is a misunderstanding, but either way he needs to clarify what the issue is, so that he is better placed to get advice on how to deal with it.

(PS I am not too concerned whether this is a troll post - in my view it is the sort of thing, in some variant or another, that can crop up for employees from time to time, so information given in the thread may be useful to someone reading it)

That is a good point actually, and probably correct in this particular case. However, there are numerous posts which seek only to inflame, provoke or engender sympathy which if they are not genune detract from the site imo. This is why I feel that people should be able to pass comment on any post they see fit to, and if they believe the post has issues surrounding it, then they should say so.

I have a mate who is half caste (his way of saying it too)..a real nice guy. He saw a girl stuck in the middle lane of the dual lane road near the local pub and came to ask us to push her car..she was blocking traffic. We popped out and did this..then we started to wonder why he came to get us when he had his brother there too...same racial mix...the girl told us with no fear of insulting those guys that "Those type of people...a girl alone can't trust them you know? " As if we'd agree?? We all sorely regretted not elaving the little !!!!! where she was..but still after how she'd acted this guy went and got her help.

Some people have very narrow minds and judge where they shouldn't. I think maybe this garage management are assuming something similar.

Waaay out of order in any case. Forcing unsociable working hours on someone for any reason is bad, even if they get paid extra.

He should get a job somewhere that has values of the 21st century IMO. HE can't be happy working there can he?

Hi, I just need a bit of advice really. Basically my boyfriend started a new job in a petrol station a few weeks ago, working 2 nights and a Sunday day. It has all been going well, except a few days ago the owner of the petrol station has said that he can't work a day shift because of his hair. My boyfriend is half cast and has afro curly hair and it isnt untidy or matted. He has asked if there is any other reason why they dont want him to work in the daytime and he is just told its because of his hair. My question is, is this discrimination? and is there anything he can do about it?

    Thanks for reading this

In hindsight the forums I have posted on include posts which contain sensitive information about myself and my family so i'm not willing to post the links publically on here but I can PM you the links if you really want me too.

But if any of you are registered on King.com, you can search for my user name 'Delilah666' and you will find I have changed my 'about me' to say 'I love money saving expert!' and you will also see I have been a member since 2005!

Im not going to post a picture of my boyfriend on here, but a celeb who's hair is very similar is Naveen Andrews from lost. My boyfriends hair is like this but a bit shorter -

(you'll have to add the www. at the front because as a new user it wont let me post links)

Scruffy hairstyle, but yes, discrimination. Your b'friend should get details of the complaints in writing and take it further.

I am wondering whether this is a H&S issue in respect of petrol filling.

Does he have anything to do with siphoning petrol or does he just work in the shop?

If it did then anyway its the employers responsibility to provide protective equipment ( such as Hairnets, hats, caps, overalls etc) but if he has no specific H&S duties where his hair needed to be tied back ( indeed if a woman with the same length hair would have to tie it bqack to do the same duties)

If he has no need for protective clothing then it sounds like discrimination to me too.

I am staggered with the dumb troll calls on this thread as per usual. Do you really think that these sorts of discrimination are simply not out there in Britain today- of course they are.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

Absolutely not. It is OK for him to take a night or evening shift.
