we took my in-laws to Vegas last October but gave the trip to them as a gift at Christmas the previous year...as it happened it was a combination retirement/40th wedding anniversary/Christmas/birthdays that year gift so I wrapped a box in 4 different types of wrap to correspond with each occasion and put loads of Vegasy stuff in it like others have suggested. It helped that we'd been to Vegas earlier in the year and collected bits for the box...I bet if you go over to the Vegas thread and put out a call that people would send you some bits and pieces they have around, or those who are in Vegas now or going shortly would pick stuff up for you if you wanted...there's loads of free flyers and magazines and stuff like that in Vegas. :)

We also sent them a 'newsletter' each week for the 8 weeks leading up to the trip with various info like American vs. English words, money, sunrise/sunset/temperature averages the days we were there, Vegas trivia, cocktails they might like to try...and we included a little gift of some sort (silly stuff like moleskin to pack for the blisters they would get from walking so much, plastic pill reminder boxes with their names on them, packs of cards, that kind of stuff). We still have the newsletters in a PowerPoint file - if you're interested PM me and I'll see if I can upload the file so you can then download it...I know you won't have weeks leading up to the holiday, but you may get some ideas from them. :)

It's a really nice thing you are doing for them...it makes me slightly teary thinking about how surprised and happy they will be - and I don't even know them!
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?
  • that really brought a tear to my eye too, what a lovely guy you are, your mum is lucky to have a good son like you. well done
  • Ooh, good idea ferf!

I'm in Vegas next week, I wouldn't mind looking out for flyers/free magazines/etc. We're only going for a week, so could post them upon return.
some people grin and bear it, others smile and do it :)
  • This has brought a tear to my eye!:D

  • Are you giving her spending money too? I know if I was skint and I received a free holiday from a relative I'd still panic about taking money with me for food, travel etc.

Well done if you have thought it all through though.

My mom isn't well, and I'd expect in a few years time this sort of thing will be beyond her ability. Nor does she have much money (been in a couple serious accidents! Neither her fault)

Anyway, on xmas day i'm giving a holiday to my mother and her fiancee (works very long hours to keep a roof over my moms head - i've made sure he's booking a week or two without knowing why and he's fine with it)

Holiday being Las Vegas, flights, 4* hotel, and a paid helicopter trip over las vegas down into the grand canyon for a champagne lunch (helicopter trips are expensive :o)
She'll also get to see dolphins and lions... another two biggies! (hell the hotel/casino has lions in it!)

It doesn't matter how I give it her, she'll burst into an array of tears regardless, this is her distant, distant dream that they'd never be able to afford on their own...

I wanted a funny way to present it, and thats why I'm here. (She isn't expecting this from me in the slightest as most 25 year olds would rather spend it on themselves =P)

Ahhhh, that's sooooooo lovely. She's a lucky mum to have you!

I've done the dolphin experience in Florida, and it'd unbelieavably good. She'll love it.

What a fantastic gift !! To present the gift, what about one of those CDs that show the photos and some music. You could personalise it and put details and a dates / times / plan on it about the dates of the holiday, bookings for the dolphins / casinos / anything else you have planned.
