Which Type Of Debit Card Do I Have ?

When the cheque guarentee phases out soon, I think the card functionality will change to distinguish between 'full authorisation' and 'normal authorisation'. The prefix of the card will probably distinguish it.

If you can't use the Pay@Pump functionality at petrol stations, you could go into the shop nearby and pay the petrol using the Chip n' PIN machine, and the card will obviously work there.
I was just going to ask the same thing - I have just opened a LTSB Silver Account and I'm awaiting my debit card - I wasn't sure what type of Visa Debit card I'd get - whether it would be an online or offline card.

I opened the account last week but still hadn't received my card so I called the call centre and they had said no card had been ordered and were unable to order one for me. I went into the branch and the lady in reception managed to override it eventually and order one - she says that may mean it's a full authorisation one - which isn't really much use to me - buying train tickets etc at busy stations it's much handier having one that doesn't require every transaction to be authorised - hence a lot of the machines don't accept them.

Surely every full authorisation card does not have to get manually ordered for this type of account. I opened the account in the branch and the adviser didn't mention any problem to me - only other thing I can think of is I applied to open the account online and then went into the branch with ID as requested. The adviser couldn't find the application even though the account number and sort code were printed on my paperwork. Fishy indeed.

I just assumed I would received a full Visa Debit card with the Silver Account - i.e. one where offline transactions can be processed. Hope I don't get a Visa Electron in disguise.

The VISA cards you have now aren't disguised as a VISA Electron. They are VISA debit cards.

I think people can buy cars and other expensive stuff with it too (including full authorisation type VISA debit cards).
• Yes but some Visa Debit Cards are Visa Debit Cards in name only - i.e. they act like Electron Cards - i.e. can't use on offline terminals - like for train tickets in the stations machines, tesco pay@pump etc which is a little bit of a pain.

I used to have an electron card and there was never any limit (not that I reached for buying expensive things. The only advantage I can see for issuing Visa Debit cards that are full auth is the acceptance of them.

Thats what A&L said to me - it wasnt until I set the FOS on them :D that they admitted that I had been accepted for an Electron only and thats basically what the card was - under a different name

Banks no longer issue CG cards, the system is being phased out in 2011.
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

I'm sure most people on here don't use the CG function. :o

I wonder if the CG function phases out in 2011, that means in order to distinguish between a 'full authorisation' and 'normal authorisation' is the prefixes on the card... Or maybe all cards become either 'full authorisation' or 'normal authorisation'?

But people will still try... in the shop where I work, people occasionally try to pay by cheque, I tell them we don't accept cheques but they can use their card as a debit card if they like, and they stomp off in a huff.

I think most bank are only issuing CG cards on request now.

To fall in line with the phase out I would think.

It wouldnt surprise me if all cards become full auth over time.

• Received my card today - a green Visa Debit with Olympic logo. Got a Silver Account with LTSB. Card starts 4921 is a 2-1 card, nothing that came with card suggests if online or offline. Soon find out...
