anyone know anything about Equipower?
Just had something from Islington council (I'm a tenant) about Equipower
its a non-profit gas & electric supplier apparently
they claim to not penalise people using pre-payment meters and have no standing charges
Seems too good to be true
anyone know if theyre cheaper than British Gas?

There are hundreds of posts about this company.
Their gas is quite competitive - especially if you are a medium to low user.
Their electricity is very expensive unless you are a very low user.
They charge the same price however you pay(quarterly, Direct Debit or pre-pay)
On the other hand they don't give any discounts for dual fuel, Direct debit etc.
Put your details into a comparison website and you will see how they are for your consumption. They are not the cheapest for the vast majority of people.
BG's websaver account is pretty competitive - their standard tariff isn't.0 -
Hi Grai, Ebico may not be the cheapest supplier, but they are an ethical standard bearer in a less than honest industry.
Well worth the extra costs , and easily recoverable with cashback.
Register with Ebico, and in the spring/summer jump ship temporally to , say, Scottish Power via Quidco for the cashback. Then back to Ebico. That way will be the least loss to the good guys and you will be keeping them in business AND you will get clean and clear bills.0 -
Where's my posts going today?

I just posted a response and it's gone
Let me try again.grai wrote:Just had something from Islington council (I'm a tenant) about Equipower

It may seem too good to be true, ... but on this rare occasion I am pleased to confirm it is actually true! :T
Are they cheaper than British Gas?
Well as usual, a simple comparison is not so easy.
BG PPM rates are available here:
http://www.britishgas.co.uk/pdf/PAYG-elec.pdf
Rates, like all electricity suppliers, vary by region but using a rough average, they charge about 15p per day standing charge and about 10p per unit
Equipower is the electricity tariff supplied by Ebico. You can see their rates here:
http://www.ebico.co.uk/ratesbyregion.php
They charge all their customers the same (region dependant), irrespective of how they pay. On average they charge about 13.5p per unit. There is no standing charge.
That means if you use more than about £200 of electricity per year, then British Gas would probably be the cheaper supplier for electricity.
But you should check using the actual rates applicable to you.
Edit: you asked about gas too, Ebico refer to this as their equigas tariff
British Gas charge 7.990p for the initial 2680kWh per year and 3.265p the remainder (no standing charge)
http://www.britishgas.co.uk/pdf/PAYG-gas.pdf
Ebico charge a flat 3.675p per unit
http://www.ebico.co.uk/gasrates.php
That means if you use less than about £1100 worth of gas per year, yes ebico will be cheaper for you for gas."Now to trolling as a concept. .... The other way Ken...Register with Ebico, and in the spring/summer jump ship temporally...
Most people would use less electricity in the summer, so switching winter time would increase the benefits of a lower unit price plus standing charge as BG (or SP in most areas) offer."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Anyway Premier, it's keeping Robin Hood in business.0

Thanks for the replies - much appreciated
I think I get the impression I'll be better off with their gas but not their electricity
oh lord - why is life so complicated!
I only want to be warm this winter without taking out a mortgage to pay the gas bill!0 -
Is the property well insulated?Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0

This forum, Gai, is not just about costs, it's about adequate insulation and understanding wattage and all sorts of things.
Cashback and freebies and bargains galore will pay the gas bills.
Last year I made £175 just by switching bank accounts and then back to where I started .Back to an ethical institution similar to Ebico.
It's about value as well as cost.
Sorry about that sounding like me Dad.0 -
