  • OP,
According to SamKnows and BT ADSL Checker your exchange IS equipped with ADSL2+ which means at that attenuation (17db) you should sync at least 15 meg so you should ask your ISP to upgrade you to their "up to 20 meg" service if they have one. Otherwise (provided you are not stuck in a long contract) you should consider Zen who do offer ADSL2+
    http://www.zen.co.uk/Broadband/S_Business.aspx

As for only getting approx 2 meg speeds even though your router syncs at the full 8 meg, chances are that one of the following applies:

    1) Your line is stuck on a 2mb profile which means you will have to call your isp and tell them that you never get speeds of more than 2 meg, they in turn will ask BT to reset your profile and then your speeds should increase within a few days

    2) Your ISP is reducing speeds at peak times to cope with the overload. If you get a higher download speed at quiet times eg 2am or 8am on a sunday morning then chances are your ISP are traffic shaping.

    BTW who is your ISP?
  • My ISP is talktalk and they might be shaping the traffic at peak times but I ran that test at 4am!!

And that package I am on is up to 8mb/s
  • I will try testing the router using master socket or maybe I just need to turn my router off for a while since it hasn't been turned off since I switched from AOL?
  • Pointless, master socket would only affect SNR or Attenuation, and those stats look better than capable of 8Mb.

Choose something like itunes download and see what speed you get.

But my bet is on 1 from frogmella.

Speedtest.net just rated my connection at 2.97
    broadbandspeedchecker says 5.488
I'm on an 8 meg connection.
Thinkbroadband says 990Kbps -less than 1!
All tests run in last 10 mins.
    Routerstats says 7488Kbps

    Ok, 2 things to try.

First of all, you might not be on Talktalk LLU. It might be worthwhile getting them to transfer you to this service if not. What's more likely however is that they've placed you on a fixed profile of 2Meg. If you log onto the Talktalk members forum, and post a query in the broadband speeds section about your slow speed, they should remove this cap for you. This actually happens quite often, but once they remove the cap, you should get the full 8Meg.

By the way, it's possible for you to live only half a mile from the exchange, but yet for the wiring distance to be miles longer! They don't always wire in straight lines, sometime in huge loops, and then you only get connected to the nearest point on that loop. But that's irrelevant as you should get the full 8Meg based on your stats.
