I am about to change to a new ISP with speeds of up to 8meg. I am less than half a mile away from the exchange, will my speed be good?

Why were your speeds not good if you only lived less than half of a mile from the exchange ? Have you moved location ?

what is your current downstream attenuation (dB) from your router stats? If its less than 30db chances are you should sync at the full 8128 kbps giving you an actual downstream speed of 7.15 mbps. As a rule of thumb, 1 km of line length equates to 16db attenuation, so 32db=2km and so on.0 -
LOL i think i must have already changed over
System Up Time 252:27:02
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 17.0 db 7.5 db
Noise Margin 12.0 db 23.0 db0 -
Do you have LLU on your exchange, or is it enabled for ADSL2+ ?? You'd get blistering speeds on that line, could sync around 20 Meg......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

No idea if it is LLU or ADSL2, the exhange post code is DT11EA.
Maybe my line is only capable of 2meg.
Speedtest.net said my max speed was 2.28mb/s download and and 0.36mb/s upload =/ Although I did see it whiz up to 3.xx at the start??0 -
no, your lien is connected at (and capable of) the 7+Mb already quoted, so there must be another reason why speedtest.net shows 2-3Mb. Maybe contention? Maybe a router issue? - many possible causes
Maybe your physical connection is 8Mb, but your ISP is shaping your traffic to 2MbChris Elvin0 -
The only LLU service on the Dorchester exchange is TalkTalk. Who is your new ISP? If it's not TT, then you'll still be on the same BT Wholesale network and it's unlikely that your speed will be any higher.
If you are only getting 2-3Mbps, then you need to look at issues like your internal wiring, filters, router etc, Start by retesting your speed using the BT text socket behind the master socket faceplate. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
17db attenuation? You fancy a house swop for my 36db?Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0

DBE - do YOU fancy a swap for my 48db ??
:rotfl:
pleeezzzeee
btw, the OP should seriously look at TT - their LLU has come on in leaps & bounds in recent years, and they are ADSL2+, so hello to 16-20 meg syncs......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
