how much for a final payment to bathroom fitter?

Im having a complete new bathroom fitted. The company we have gone with use a contract fitter so we pay him seperately. We have payed for all the equipment and the fitter is now installing. Now in total the fitting is costing £2700. He started monday and has had a £300 deposit. I am giving him a cheque today for £1000. He did want another payment next wednesday for a £1000 and a final payment when complete of £400. Now i think that is too small amount for final payment and i think i should pay the rest (£1400) on completion. Do you think im being reasonable? Dont get me wrong he seems to be doing a great job and is working hard but to me £400 to hold on to is not that much. Any thoughts guys and gals?

I think payment for equipment in advance and the rest on completion is reasonable. What you are proposing seems more than reasonable to me.

What was in your contract/agreement before he started work (either written or verbal agreement).

No actual sums were metioned but was told a deposit,interim payment and then final payment on completion.

Well I make that
£300 last week
£1000 today
and £1400 on completion.

Sounds like what you agreed.
