heating not working

I am freezing, cant feel my toes in the car.

I have an x reg F Fiesta 1.8 tdi and the heaters are blowing cold constantly, TBH i dont think that they have ever worked as every time I put them on they just go cold.

So far we have changed the thermostat and the heating control valve and checked for air blockage. The water is heating up to the HCV but once it hits that it doesnt seem to let the warm water through as the pipes on the other side are cold.

We have noticed that the fan doesnt work either maybe this is all connected - I dont know. We have also checked all the fuses and they are all working.

Does anyone have any ideas please.

I assume the engine itself is running at a normal temperature ? If you say you've replaced the control valve, my best guess would be that the heater matrix is gummed up. I don't know about your car in particular, but it's usually fairly simple to get to the inlet and outlet hoses - you'll probably need to consult the Haynes manual. But if you can get to hoses, try flushing the matrix through with a garden hose. Don't go too mad as the matrix, like the radiator, is fairly delicate, but hopefully you should be able to flush out any gunk that's in there. This may cure the problem, if not then at least it's cost nothing to try :-)

when you say checked for air blockage,do you mean that you have 'bled' the system?

How does one 'bleed' the cooling system on an F reg Fiesta, exactly?

Check that the heater control knob is actually located into and is turning the mechanism behind it.

The heater control valve is a very common failure on fiestas and will be on the shelf of your local Ford partsman.
  • i believe there is certain HCV part numbers that should be avoided as they are a faulty design. there is a certain part number that is the one you should use. some googling should find this info
