there are hundreds of these western union scams running each day, it never ceases to amaze me that people still take the time to ask if they could be for real! Move on
  • we had a guy ring the bell at the office i used to work at part time (a converted house in london)-he'd replied to an advert on gumtree and he'd been sensible enough to check if it was too good to be true!

my boss posted her own gumtree message with the address to see if he'd duped anyone else and turned out a few people had sent him money!!!!

    don't do it!
  • thing is i was really interested in the place so in the back of my head i was denying it being a bit of an obvious scam-im no stranger to their techniques. it was a flat in leytonstone on the high road £100 a week and the pictures were lovely. of course i was skeptical when they said they were not in the country so i checked it out and can only find forums like it. im sure i will not be persuing this, however i am curiouse to see what details they give when i 'send the money' they also sent a drivers license with the name on it-im sure its not hard to fake them?

    OH GOD
if you send the money they can cash it and you will never get it back - it's a western union scam
    google it...
  • no im not sending it im going to ask for the details and put that in the report to the police. not sending anything
  • generally lovely photos means they've been lifted off an EA website....
And although there are a few people who would save the photos from the house they are planning to BTL, most of the others are scammers :(

I can't believe anyone could fall for these scams - they're so obviously fake!! Many of these adverts on Gumtree are posted by young men in Nigerian internet cafes, and they ALWAYS ask you to send them money by Western Union!:rotfl:

They usually make out they're female models and need to come to the UK for a modelling contract, but their PA's can't book their flights without you first sending them the money.:) They'll even send you fake cheques in the post (or pretend they've sent them) to try and fool you into thinking they've paid deposit plus 3 months rent in advance - PLUS and extra £2k on top which they need you to return by Western Union. They come out with all sorts of mad stories, such as they can't get money out of their country blah blah blah............and they're always Christians, models or university graduates (with bad grammar!:D)

My friend sent one round the twist when she had a laugh with him (HIM pretended to be a female model) and told him she'd sent him £1500 through Western Union, and he rushed down to his local outlet 3 times to collect it. When it wasn't waiting for him on the 3rd occasion he turned really nasty and demanded she resend the money as she was holding him up from booking his flight - he was desperately needed at a fashion shoot in London the next day!:rotfl:

So she told him she'd resend it, and again he rushed down for the cash. He emailed back in bold lettering telling her she was mucking him about! My friend then told him she knew what his game was and that she'd been playing with him. She said his IP address had been traced by Interpol and he would be arrested for attempted fraud, and she also said she was a witch and had cast a spell on him and that in 20 days time his fingers would start to stiffen and shrink so he would no longer be able to use a keyboard.:p He wrote back (probably from a different internet cafe) begging her te remove the spell and that he'd never do it again!:rotfl:

Oh, forgot to mention.............he was obviously a serial scammer - he even checked the Western Union website (after my friend gave him a fake reference number:p) to see if the money had been sent before he traipsed down to the WU outlet. He got quite uppity and said it wasn't showing up on the website, so she said WU had told her there was a computer glitch and not all transfers were showing up on the main site - but the outlet would definitely have the money. So he humiliated himself 3 times - and probably spent half an hour or so on a packed stifling bus in the searing heat rushing to collect the money he was trying to steal. Not sure how much bus journeys cost out there - but he made 6 trips there and back!:rotfl:
