FTP

I thought I'd update my website using WS-ftp as before but now I cannot get it to connect to my site. It tries to get through to 1and1 but the connection fails. Not sure if its a dodgy program or I've forgotten one vital thing. Anyone know an FTP program that an oldie can use?
Preferably free of course.

What error message appears at the bottom of WSFTP?
  • Thanks for your reply Tony, most common message was
! failed to connect to ***********.co.uk
I have now got through, when I try to transfer files all I get is
! Receive error, blocking call cancelled.
Unfortunately there is no tutorial to remind me where I'm going wrong.

  • Got it to work, downloaded a copy of Cute Ftp. Might even buy it if not too dear.

I've tried several ftp clients (including Cute FTP and WS FTP LE) and the one I use and can recommend is SmartFTP. Free for personal use, although it displays a nag screen if you run it during office hours!

Thanks Chippy, I'll give it a try when cute runs out. I don't have to update my site very often(about twice a year) so a free one would suit me nicely.

Looked on the site and it says 30 day trial. Where do I get the personal version?

  • CuteFTP is a hideous program. It's one of the very first programs that started installing spyware in people's computers without their consent or knowledge. >:(

SmartFTP has gone nagware. It's only a matter of time before its remaining users get sick of the annoying pop-ups and ditch it altogether and the program either goes shareware or dies on its own.

FileZilla is the new favourite in the FTP community. It's as good (if not better!) as any payware, including WS_FTP Pro.

    I'l second that :)
  • I tried the filezilla and will again but was not really able to come to terms with it. Cute ftp may try to add spyware but so far nothing has got through(adaware, spywareblaster, Spybot S&D, Ccleaner. Also ran Hijack this scan) I found the user interface much easier than Filezilla, I found the scrollin log file distracting. Too much information for my pea brain to assimilate :-[.

FlashFXP is very good as well. Quite cheap.

of course there's always the command line FTP which comes with Windows and DOS.

open a DOS / Command windows

    ftp <server address>
enter user + pass when prompted

use put to upload files and get to download files

mput and mget for multiple files (with wildcards)

    help for list of commands

    bye to exit
