  • My husband came back from a week long business trip last night with 12 mini portions of cheese spread he saved from his breakfasts at the hotel.
The first thing I thought of was this thread :rotfl:
Second thing was what to do with 12 portions of cheese spread

just be careful if sharing a meal you are not charged for two people - I have heard of instances where this has happened even though no extra food has been produced/cooked.

He he! It should keep in the fridge for ages? What kind is it? Like could you add it to pasta as a cheesy sauce?
A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

I always try to take tea/coffee/condiments if they are on offer. They are great for picnics / holiday too,.

Thanks Zippychick - they seem to be a mix of plain and flavoured i.e ham :o cheese spread.
Good idea about pasta, was also thinking perhaps on a JP? Failing that can also put it on toast as a snack for the kids

I would take the cheese, in fact I never go out without at least two chinese takeaway plastic boxes in my handbag. I don't make a fuss but if anyone notices I say it's for the cat - outs cats eat anything ;)

I'm known for being frugal and I do get annoyed when people get mixed up between being sensible and being wasteful. I work hard for my money and would rather spend it on things I really want than waste it. For the sake of the planet I hate waste too.

It grieved me the other day when I went out for our department meal and the girl I sat opposite ate just 1/8 of her huge pizza. Why order it! The waiter/owner asked her if it had been OK and she said yes so he asked if she wanted to take it with her and she refused. She is 18 and she must struggle to survive in her flat as I know she has no family. As I earn about 6 times more than her I didn't dare say anything. (I did buy the wine for 32 people and that didn't bother me, that wasn't waste, they are a great team, I hope they enjoyed it)
Doing voluntary work overseas for as long as it takes .......
My DD might make the odd post for me
  • Hi All,

Many thanks for your (hilarious) replies. You have made me feel normal again!!

The other week I went to a "chain" pub/restaurant with my parents and my children. My son (7) wanted a Chicken Curry but they didn't have any on the children's menu and I didn't think he would manage to eat a whole one to himself (and obviously didn't fancy paying £7.00 either)! I asked the waitress if it was possible to get a half portion of this and explained why. She said they didn't come in half portions but she could always scrape one half into the bin and then give him the rest on a plate!!!:eek:

Obviously I said no and explained that it would be an utter waste. Instead ordered one full portion and some garlic bread and shared it with him. I really do think there should be classes, starting in primary school, regarding wastefulness and money-saving. If there was, I'm sure the country would be in a better financial state than it is now...
  • Hi, everyone

    Wow....I am not alone!

I've read through the whole thread nodding in agreement and laughing with you over peoples responses to being "money saving".

As a teenager it absolutely horrified me if my parents wrapped up meat for the dog anywhere! But guess what I do now ?(and my dog's really big! I ask the whole table for 'contributions')

Do you think it's an age thing? I'm over forty now (gulp) and couldn't care less, but not long ago I would have visibly cringed.

Also, we've found that Indian and Chinese etc restaurants are more than happy to bag it up for us, but it's the english one's that can be a bit snooty (though, to be honest, I'm getting to the stage where I'll happily put a 'lock 'n' lock' box in my bag and take food anyway!)

Mirror, mirror, on the wall. I am my mother after all!

  • I seem to embarass myself to no end with my family. My wife hates me for finding cheap stuff using MSE. (How can she think like that??). And when i was made redundant, my dad said it is because of the MSE website. Nobody praised me when i got a job paying more (was a bit lucky).
I order quite a few freebies on the weekly email. And try donate some of the money saved to Charity or to my baby.
I took biscuits to work in my bag and the rat ate them; it jumped into my bag either in the office or at home. Still, my boss tells me how much money he saves and how spendthrift more day men are. And a senior colleague tells how she saves money on her salary. They are all probably quasi millionaires or somewhere there. And another colleague tries to buy antique watches cheaply on ebay (there is a tip for us there). Guess people who make fun of our moneysaving will never know the rewards and fun of our hard work.

We were at a comedy club at the weekend (£5 tickets instead of £12 full price - same show as the full price show, second row seats ;)) one of the comedians there did a little routine on why he's liking the recession - he says it's now OK to not spend money willy nilly whereas before people would accuse you of being mean - he said before the recession you were expected to sign up for a fiver a month donation when the youngster with the clipboard approached you in the High Street, but now you can say you're skint because of the recession, and when they say 'but these people have got NOTHING' he replies 'well they're lucky because I have a mortgage and a loan so that makes me worth even less than nothing' and that once he has somehow managed to pay the debt off he will be back up to having nothing too.;)

It's a very fair point though - it's much more acceptable these days to use the reduced section in Tesco, or shop in Poundland - just look at the amount of people crowded round and you'll see it's not mean, it's positively trendy!!:T

I think the millions of people who get this site's e-mail have a lot to do with it also.:money:
