Are you ever embarassed by your money-saving ways?

I have always been a moneysaver from a young age, I remember hitting my milestones (e.g. first £100 and first £1000). However now I am a student and keep an eye out for all kinds of deals and tips.
One recent thing (earlier today actually) where I was slightly embarassed was buying a Chicago Town Takeaway Pizza promo pack (£3.45 for a 12" pizza). In their promo, it says you can have your moneyback if it isn't as good as Pizza Hut or Dominoes. It was a really good pizza, and is as good as local takeaways, however not as good as pizza hut as they claim! So I've cut the promo bit off the pack, kept my receipt, filled in a form and am going to claim back the £3.45. One of my flatmates said I was the only person hes seen to bother to do stuff like this.
Other ways I do things like this is complaining to my friends about spending, and trying to push them away from overpriced things in Supermarkets. If its quality and good I don't mind them buying it from time to time, but you have to save money as a student!! (even though I may be a hypocrite as a lot of my savings are spent on nights out haha)0 -
I remember reading even our very own Martin Lewis was seen using a voucher in Yo Sushi, so the stigma, as it were, has really been removed from using vouchers. I honestly think it's cooler and smarter as you then have more money to spend on other things and make your money go further and work harder for you.0

We were in a Premier Inn (I think, one of those value hotels) and their guarantee is that if you don't get a good nights sleep, you can ask for a refund. Well, we didn't. There was no air con, no fan available at reception and the window didn't open to 'prevent suicides' (according to reception when I went down in my jammies at 2am to beg for a fan). The room was noisy and I woke up feeling hot and bothered and not rested. So I went to reception, quoted the guarantee and got my £50 refunded. My now husband was a bit annoyed that I was making a fuss, but then happily spent the refund when we stopped for a spot of shopping on the way home!
No embarrassment at all. I love this thread, can't help but keep posting!!!0 -
Not only am I not embarrassed, I'd probably have ordered one ploughman's between TWO people in the first place! At a local restaurant, I once said to the waitress/owner, Shame I can't order just one steak dinner between my daughter and me, cos we just can't eat a whole one each, and the waitress said OK, order one steak dinner and I'll bring you two plates!0

A few years back I was having a CBA day so on the way home decided to go into local Italian cafe and a guy was eating a spaghetti bolognese but it was huge. I ask if I ordered one to eat could I have an extra dish so my dd (aged one at the time) could share, the lady said no I would have to order two, but they would put one in a tray so I could take it home to share with her. I said no thanks, as I can cook it myself. Off I trotted home and cooked it myself for a fraction of what it would of cost had she let me eat in and shared it there. I have been in places where they have let me share before.
Edit: I wasn't embarrassed deciding not to pay for a portion to take it home, even when she started saying why she couldn't do it, not cost effective (yeah 6 quid each and it already made).0 -

Similar thing happened to me (water was playing up, low pressure to a trickle) but in Premier Inn's defence I did't even need to ask they just charged me one night instead of the two I'd stayed.0 -

That's ridiculous, having to pay for a portion for a one year old. When in the USA earlier this year they assumed we won't even order for our 18 month old and he just ate from all of our plates. Also I quite reguarly shared a meal with my ten year old daughter as the portions were huge.
Even in restaurants here I don't order for our youngest. He won't eat a full meal so why pay for one? We haven't been told anywhere that we need to pay for a meal for him and we just give him food from our plates.0 -
Me & dd often share a meal when out, or we have frequently ordered childrens portions, since we both have a small appetite. I notice more places offer smaller portions these days. I hate to waste food, and would rather have a smaller amount of food and pay less.
