White cylicone going black all the time in the bathroom

Can anyone tell me why the cylicone which is especially for bathrooms (bought the right product) keeps turning black and now looks awful, sure a bit of jif and a scrub works it's magic but then it comes back again, black any ideas?

Some silicone is better than others. Dow Corning is one of the better makes.

Not much you can do except clean it and dry off after every bath or shower. If it were me, I'd remove it and replace with Dow.

  • Are you using mould resistant?
Was it smoothed over with a finger wet with spit?

Try using a mould reisitant silicone and wet your finger with water.

The good stuff should be mould resistant for at least 5 years some are better than others and may go up top 10 years

Some of these sealants are considered to be Carcinogenic.

I would put some water with a drop of washing up liquid in a small container and dip your finger in that.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Can you improve the ventilation in the bathroom?

Dow Cornings is a superior product although much more expensive than other brands, but worth it. Look on the tube to make sure it is Mould Resistant. In terms of smoothing it off, I spray it with a water washing up liquid mix and smooth it off with a Magnum Lolly stick to give a nice seamless finish.

    They all go black.
Depends on where you live as well, countryside is worse than the town.
Ours lasts 3 to 5 years, but can show signs from year 1.
Dow corning 785 is ok, but a bit more demanding to get a good finish.
  • It's going black because it's mould growing, ventilation does sound like it maybe an issue, Have you got an extractor fan fitted? do you use your heating? do you open your window for 20 mins or so after using the shower or bath? :-)

If you want to make your new mastic look absolutely megaliscious :D
get some masking tape and run a neat line of tape where you want the mastic to stop (obviously this is when the tiles / bath are dry)
DON'T use your finger (do you lot still drive model T fords? ;o) )
teaspoon dipped in soapy water will make your mastic look ace. take the tape off immediately and resist the urge to touch.
Bit of an old wives tale (though it works) but another alternative to getting rid of stubborn mould marks is to use neat vodka (a crying shame I know) and if it doesn't come off then drink the remaining vodka and you won't a toss or remember
The advice I give on here is based on my many years in the preservation industry. I choose to remain anonymous, I have no desire to get work from anyone. No one can give 100% accurate advice on a forum if I get it wrong you'll get a sincere apology and that's all:D
