acer aspire 5738z - battery not charging

I have a 4 wk old acer aspire laptop with windows vista premium on it. I used it unplugged last night, but have just noticed that the battery is not charging on it now it is plugged in.
ive tried switching off, pulling the mains lead out and reconnecting - but no joy. Please can anyone help me? or is it a trip back to comet for a replacement!!
Thanks,

Did you check if yours needed the recent BIOS update? As posted here: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=2020905&highlight=your+aspire+5738+5738z+faulty
  • thanks for the reply. yes i'd already looked at that thread - ive just double checked and mine isnt from the faulty batch. looks like a return to the shop. just hope they replace and dont send it away - i need it for work.
  • Was told to ring Acer. They told me to remove the ac cable, remove battery, hold power key down for 20 secs, replace battery, replace ac lead and not use for 8hrs.

I have the exact same problem with an Acer 5738z model, it sounds a bit odd to do what they say but did it work? How good were Comet? I wait with bated breath and a low battery! Regards JM

...Since posting this note, I have tried the above procedure and it works fine, why I don't know and whether the problem will re occur, who knows.

because you're fully discharging all the components on the mobo, including the charging circuit, which may well have had an electronic switch latched off and not switching on when the charger was plugged in...it happens sometimes :)

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

small note about laptop batteries, they need a certain percentage before showing up as charging on the taskbar, i've noticed this with all the laptops that i have looked at for family and friends and neighbours, once the battery shows around 5-10% then the battery charge message appears.
Personally recommend any one with a laptop getting the free battery information tool http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/battery_information_view.html as it will tell you everything about the battery, how much charge it is taking and how much charge is in the battery and when windows says 100% if its actually whatever the mAh is on the battery.

  • I have an acer 5738z and have owned it from sept 09, and it's doing rather well, last september i bought a new battery as it was dying very quickly on me, and so i forked out £63 for a new one from acer spare parts so not a dodgy one from ebay, and it was working perfectly. lasted about 2 hours which is what I would expect. anyways, the other day my boyfriend hoovered the fan bits of my laptop, nothing major jnust to suck some dust out, anyways. I turned on my laptop yesterday and was running very slowly, so I turned it off and spent an hour waiting for laptop to run through and install 11 updates, and then i turned it back on and noticed that the battery wasn't lasting at all, and this morning, i timed it from the moment i turned it on (charged it yesterday and turned it off when it was full so was full this morning) and within 35 minutes was totally dead on power saver. something has gone wrong with my battery and I dont know what comeback, if any, I have from the people?! can anybody help, im literally fuming at my boyfriend, who knows about ocmputers and so i trust him to know what hes doing more so than joe bloggs in comet world and he said hoovering it wouldn't have done anything so would might have caused this?!

please heeelp! I can't waste a day not using my laptop for 8 hours as I have my dissertation due 2 weeks tomorrow and I need to crack on :(
