You can probably buy meths a lot cheaper than surgical spirit (and its essentially the same plus a colour added, less the castor oil).
A great degreaser. I've even known decorators to clean their paint brushes in it.
I hate to imagine what damage it might do to a vehicle's paintwork.
Being hygroscopic (water attracting), even if it doesn't remove the paint, it'll probably start corrosion as anyone who has used a tilly lamp pre-heating torch will probably be all too familiar with.
Meths is only useful to clean brushes if the paint used was water-based - it the paint was oil-based, it isnt much use."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0 -
If the paint was water based, wouldn't they use water to clean the brushes?maninthestreet wrote: »Meths is only useful to clean brushes if the paint used was water-based - it the paint was oil-based, it isnt much use.

I'm not keen on the de-icer sprays, i bought some last year but it seemed to make the inside of the windows go all frozen misty and i'd have to wait for the heaters to warm up enough to get it off. So i just scrape it off now. If i could park right outside my house i'd use water though.0

De-icer is very cheap (two big cans from the pound shop) and I never get through more than two in winter and I park outdoors and leave home early. It is by far the quickest way to do your windscreen and rear window, and door mirrors, and side windows. If you can quickly and easily do all windows you are far less likely to be tempted to drive without full visibility.
It si well worth it, and i am normally on my way before my neighbour has faffed about running the engine and using a scraper. I just spray and go.
Also will release your wiper blades if they freeze to the window and the seals on your side windows. The cost of having to replace any of these due to ice will out weigh buying cut price de-icer.0 -

you still need to clear the windows though:p0 -
I would do if my Quickclear screen was still working. Too many failed elements after 11 years.
