windscreen de-icer

  • I don't have a Costco card, but my mate does. That's why I was suggesting chipping in. I now know it doesn't help the OP, but it can be valid for others who know someone who does have a card.

  • poor cold water on screen, put on wipers, done
  • When retailers do it for 99p a pop, I'd just stick to de-icer out of supermarkers etc than guess your own stuff. The stuff in supermarkets is at least a bit friendlier to paint- indeed some it is virtually screenwash.
  • Neat screenwash in a spray bottle can work pretty good too. And since Asda were punting it for a £1 for half a gallon, that's a lot of spraying :)

Have a kettle or pot full of water in the kitchen overnight i.e. it is at room temp,
In the morning lift the wipers up from the windscreen and then put them back down.
pour water on windscreen - ice melts, start wipers.

The weather would have to be very cold for ice to reform. Even if it is really cold I would still start with this method, then if it doesn't work move on to warmed water.

If you don't want ice in the first place, I find no problems by putting something on the windscreen, I have used in the past

    carpet
    car floor mats (rubber)
    big bit of cloth
    newspaper with weights on

Only problem with this is if there is any rain, or a partial thaw during the night followed by a refreeze. It's hard to get ice off, but frozen paper is a !!!!!!, and leaves a right mess behind too. Poundland are doing plastic windscreen covers that, while not perfect, are acceptable as long as the bit you a covering is totally dry before you cover it...

Sounds like I should just buy de-icer! It sounds cheap enough. Last year I just chucked water over the windscreen, and one time I decided to switch the wipers on before it had properly melted. New wiper blades don't come cheap :o
