Hi there! This is the Daily Thread for Wednesday 11th November. It is an 'Over the garden fence' type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.
Please do not start a new Daily Thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two Dailys' live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new Daily Thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “Hi everyone, hope you are all well” type start is just as good.

Good morning to my OS friends on Armistice Day,

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Haven't heard from Tris in two days.. but am hoping he is still getting stronger. Thank you all for the continued good wishes I know he appreciates them, as do I.

The carpet cleaners came at 3.30pm yesterday so we camped out in the bedroom for the eve to avoid the wet carpets, with the kettle, and ordered pizza for dinner. :o

My Approved Food delivery came with some rather good bargains, including 6 x 400g of pear and peach cubes in natural juice. My OH also picked up a Breville Pie Maker from Freecycle so I am looking forward to playing with that.

My OS-iness today will be going through assorted items that were just thrown into yet another plastic crate for me to look at later when we emptied the lounge. It's amazing how much stuff was behind the sofa and down the back of the sideboard when it was moved. Rediscovered at least two lip glosses and 58p in change amongst the rest of the 'treasure'.

Will go and put the BM on soon and make a cup of redbush tea shortly. If Tris isn't here by 0430 I am going back to bed, I am bone weary from not sleeping well. Dinner today will be the spanish omelette we were supposed to have on Monday night and never did, and lunch will be left over pizza!
Pippa.S - Happy Birthday hon! HSbirthpressies_5172_064_7483.gif Hope you have a great day.bdaycake2.gif
Hilstep - It was good to see you posting.
redruby - I was amazed I still had peppers and chillies ripening on my plants when they are all out in the bad british weather.
Bargain - we are working our way through a sack of potatoes from the local farm and have had some monster ones. We have been eating jacket potatoes at least twice a week because of it!
Donny-gal - Happy Belated anniversary hon
Celyn - So sorry to hear about your uncle, my condolences.hugs.gif How is your dad doing? And wow, what a fantastic structure that cake was. You are so clever.
Essex and Nic1 - I do hope you both feel better soon, you poor things.
Sarah - Your new puppy sounds like a handful! Pictures at all?
PenPin - Sorry to hear you have been under the weather hon
thankyou.gifto everyone who mentioned me yesterday.

I hope today is the best it can be for you all. With love, light and squidgyHShuggies.gif for anyone who would like one.

I hope Tris logs on for you MSD.
I've woken up with a mouth like a camels armpit this morning, hubby left the heating on all night.
Nice to hear from you PP, sorry you aren't so good.
I'm off to work soon, just going to have some cereal & a cuppa.
I hope everyone has a good day.
    Hugs Hester

  • Morning MSD and Hester, and everyone that follows. I shall not forget it is Armistice Day. I'm not going into work, throughout yesterday I was sneezing and had a sore throat, and overnight it has developed into a full cold with more sneezing than before. :( When my alarm went off for me to go to work I've decamped to the sofa to let DH get some more sleep. I've barely managed an hour.

Hope everyone has a good day. I don't think there'll be much OSiness going on today. Hope you hear from Tris soon, MSD.

    (((hugs))) to those in need.

Hi Diva, Hester and all who follow

Diva - hope you hear from Tris soon.

(((Hugs))) to PenPin and all the other poorlies.

My cold is still hanging on for some reason; it's making me tired and I'm still shivering, which is really starting to get on my nerves.Theres's so much I need to do but I just haven't got the energy these days.

Pippa - have a great birthday!:bdaycake:It's my DIL1's birthday today, too.

Well, I shall be observing the two minutes silence today at 11am British time, and also at 11am French time. It's very sad that all the veterans from the first world war have now all passed awat.

Dinner today - if I can find the energy to prep for it - will be pork chops with potatoes and courgettes, and a leek and mushroom sauce. It was meant to be dinner yesterday but we ended up with ham, egg and chips because it was all I could be bothered to do!

Anyway, the weather here is as lousy at it is in the UK still - really damp and gloomy. Let's hope we all get some sun soon.

Well, I'm off for another cuppa and I'll try and catch up with yesterday's thread today.

    KathyXX

By the way - happy belated anniversary to Mr and Mrs Donny-Gal! Hope you had a great day!

    Morning everyone.

H off for the next 3 days and is going to be re-painting the lounge, stairs and landing. So me and the kids will have to disappear at least while he does the lounge.
Tea tonight will be a makeshift. I've got a ham joint to boil (to reduce the saltiness so that I can cook it in SC) so I'd better get a move on and do that. Got to get ready for my school mindee who comes at 8am!

Diva - glad to see you posting. Really hoping Tris is OK xxx

Pippa - hbday.gif Hope you have a lovely day

mioliere - sounds like you need this bed.gif

Not to depress you but since it's Armistice Day I wanted to share one of my favourite poems is by Wilfred Owen who sadly died just 7 days before Armistice Day. I think this poem captures some of the horror that these soldiers (on both sides I would imagine) had to go through at the Somme and the Western Front.
    DULCE ET DECORUM EST
Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
    But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind.
Gas! Gas! Quick, boys! – An ecstasy of fumbling,
    Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling,
    And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime . . .
Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.
If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
    His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie; Dulce et Decorum est
    Pro patria mori.

Hugs to those that need them.
Have a good day OS or not.

    Morning All

looks like it might be a good day here - its not light yet but the sky seems promising however it is very chilly this morning.
DS1 passes his theory for his driving yesterday (:T) so its full steam ahead for him as he is ready for his test and DS2 has his theory tomorrow. I know he hasn't put in as much work so we shall see!

I stopped in a little co-op on the way how from work to get some milk last night and was glad i did - I got three packs of sliced chicken breast for £1.50 each which went in the freezer and two tubs of mini meringues for 42p each...they didn't last the night! I've had a few good bargains from there when i've called in - might have to start making a regular stop!

Dinner last night was a lovely warming chilli ready in the slow cooker when i got in from work - perfect and tonight will be braised steak that I cooked earlier and took out of the freezer last night.

Half way threw my working week now so hopefully its downhill from here - I've a couple of Mystery shops over the weekkend but one is to go to the cinema and the other if to go for a pizza...can hardly call it work can i?:D

MSD hope you hear good news about your friend soon - hopefully he's just getting some much needed rest

Hope everyone has a reflective day, thanking those that went before us for their efforts and remembering those that still serve in the name of our country,

    Hello OS Friends,
I hope everyone is doing ok?
I think Im beginning to feel a little brighter. I was certainly a lot more active yesterday and managed to cook a meal (with some help) yesterday which is the first time in a week. I have also started to buy some birthday and christmas presents.

My DD (17) is off to London with her friend to "meet" Robert Pattison at a premiere party. Her friend won tickets!!! I am hoping that they will be ok cos they are both as dopey as each other and she has to negotiate the underground. Her dad spent a hour working out her route with her and she has a step by step route plus a contingency plan. Its hard being a parent to teens as you have to let them go but.... Dont spose I will get much sleep until she gets back in the early hours tomorrow.

Not sure what my OS plans are today. My elderly parents are visiting today which i find very difficult as they dont understand my illness and keep expecting a miraculous recovery...I wish. Anyway !!!!

MSD - hope tris is doing ok.
Celyn - that cake is amazing.

    Have a lovely day,
    Love Mollyx
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Well last nights celebrating achievment evening at DD1s old school was a tad dissapointing as very few of the teachers showed and none of the reg tutors were there and DD wanted to thank them for their help and encouragment never mind she was a bit upset i think.
DS is very tired but is really enjoying his new school and DD1 said she hadnt seen him so happy for a long time i hope it lasts

Thanks for all the kind thoughts. Bargain bird - I'm not going back to bed, but I will be on the sofa under a blanket for most of the day!

Bitsy Beans - what lovely words. As are these:

    ffieldwel2.jpg

    ffieldbar.jpg

    In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.
