please help, computer-challenged!!

I hope this is the right place to ask a few questions about switching my broadband and please excuse any daft/obvious questions!:o

I've just reached the end of my contract with Onetel (£23.99 per month) and now have my migration-code.

I've been looking around this board a bit and it seems that pipex and madasafish might be the best value/quality, but several things are making me stall:

1. it's highly likely I will move from here (rented accomodation) within the next year, so would I get stuck in a contract?

2. I've already got the modem thing from onetel - is this all the equipment I need? Does the new provider give you modem etc anyway? If you already have this can you just switch provider and everything works as before?

Other questions swimming in my head, confusing me further......

I call Holland regularly and use 18185 for this and all other landline calls. Might it be better to get some kind of package with the broadband?

I guess I'm what you call a "surfing" user, occasional small downloads. I don't need massively high speeds (or whatever the technical term is!)

Any ideas about what might be the best option for me gratefully received!!

:j If I were you I'd wait as all the ISP's are competing with each other at the moment, sky are currently going to launch there BB packages, and it may mean that if you've got a premiun package with them you could get free BB. also you only need one modem and if you change ISP you should only need your username and password to logon, I service pc's for my friends and family, and they all seem to have the same modems but are with different ISP's, hope this help's as I'm currently waiting to move ISP and I'm just waiting to see what else happen's before I change and get locked into a 12 month contract, as that seem's to be the main issue at the moment, but you could look at force9 which is who I'm with at the moment, and trying to leave as I have an issue with them over my download allowance, I don't download hardly anything, the odd program and MS updates, but I seem to have gone over my download usage of 10gb peak time 4pm-midnight, yet I've only used 5gb between midnight-4pm off-peak which is a 20gb usage, so I can't use my network between 4pm-midnight which sucks, this is the first time this has happened to me in 11 months od being with them, but it still sucks, hope this help's T

  • Hi Alex W,

I don't know the answer to all of your queries, but I can help you with your situation and how it would apply to Madasafish.

It sounds like the sticky part is that you're going to possibly be moving within the first 12 months of getting a new provider. There is a 12 month contractual policy with Madasafish - however you're in the position to minimise the cancellation fee because you can migrate in and you've got your own hardware. If you migrate in and you don't take the free hardware (your existing hardware should work with our services) the cancellation fee within the first 12 months would be 25 pounds.

I wanted to be able to compare this to Pipex's cancellation policy, but in their terms and conditions they say that the do charge a cancellation fee within the first 12 months, however it's rather obtuse as they make you call them if you want to know what it is. (see term 13.1). They do, however, state that any 'free' hardware must be paid for if the service is terminated. Thus, with either provider I would recommend sticking with your existing hardware as not to incur extra cancellation costs.

I would also recommend signing up using the "CHEAPER" promotional code or if you know someone who already has our services, use their referral code. This will give you a further discount on Madasafish.

If you're calling Holland a lot - does the person you're calling have broadband too? If so, then why not check out Skype? If you both sign up for the free subscription, you can talk for free over your broadband connections. I do this for my calls to the states and there isn't much difference to the quality of my calls and it's one less thing that I have to pay outright for.

    I hope that is helpful.

    Kind regards,
    Samara

  • Thanks for the suggestions!

What is the promotional code? How would I get this?

Skype is an excellent idea- we've already got it but due to some dodgy-ness at the dutch end (problems with connections and other things he's trying to fix) for now we have to use the phone. But otherwise I would also highly recommend it!
