The profile is basically the plastic that the windows are made of. They are all pretty much the same, there is a differance in whites as some are lighter/darker/creamier. It can make a differance when the windows are trimmed off as these must be the same shade. Also door panels must be the same shade.

It would be nice if they made them and didnt order them in.

You want 28mm k glass, reinforcment in any door panel. Fire escape and easy clean hinges. And defo FENSA.

Also if having more than 1 door then ask for keyed a like barrels.

Thanks, that is what I really wanted to know.

Also, thanks to myhoose for the makes of profiles

i did the same as confuseddad an also had
air vents put in,asked the neighbours who
they used one name kept coming up in
    conversation so rang them,local company
makes them fom scratch an the only trendy
thing about them was the sweat shirts the
fitters wore with a tiny company logo on them.
had the option of doing it all at once or window
by window as I could afford it,they have my
window measurements on file and I have been
saving up and paying for them one at a time
    its worked out quite well.

I have got two companies coming round to quote for replacing all the windows in my house, probably with UPVC.

Could someone suggest what questions I should ask as I am not very good with salesmen?

    Thanks

shame you are not going for timber - that said all you need to do at this preliminary stage is tell them you have 3 quotes coming. the serious gents will just come, look, and give you one price and leave.

Anything other than this you will pay over the odds.
  • How about
how do you sleep at night?
Are you really as stupid as you look?
You look like you married your cousin is it true?

Sorry Lolly couldn't resist, but definately one price, no gimmics and no dodgy ex soap actors humiliating themselves on daytime Tv ads
    :)
The advice I give on here is based on my many years in the preservation industry. I choose to remain anonymous, I have no desire to get work from anyone. No one can give 100% accurate advice on a forum if I get it wrong you'll get a sincere apology and that's all:D

    Hi

I am in a similar position to the OP. I have had 5 local companies come round to quote. I am asking for 3 seperate prices, back, front and a sliding patio door. I have told them all that I will getting the job done in two stages, back and then front and patio door. This is to give me a chance to see that the windows are OK and that the fitting is good on the smaller job at the back first.
I got all of the companies from the FENSA website.
Some of the questions/requirements I asked/requested were: Leave/replace inside cills, Even Sight Line(Dummy vents) at front, local references, how much deposit, make of windows, WER rating.
Didn't get too much hard sell - quotes back so far range from £8000 to £12000.

Now I am faced with a tough choice as to which one to go for as none were that bad or that good. Don't want to decide purely on price but it's difficult.

    Cheers

    Steve

Ask for the quotes in writing. The decent guys will have no problem doing that - the dodgy ones don't like putting anything on paper.

Plastic window salesman don't really get a chance to be 'that good'. Just about anyone in the building trade can install plastic tat. Not a skilled job at all hence the wide competition. If you have concerns get planning and get a genuine builder you know to install as this is also totally legit and does not require a fensa reg installer.
