Maclaren buggies amputating! why no UK action?

Options
So Maclaren, a British company is recalling a million of their buggies in America because some have chopped childrens fingers off! They are supplying Americans with hinge guards to protect their children but of course, here in the UK what do they do????

Well instead of the safety modification, we can simply have a label, telling parents to keep their kids away during folding and unfolding!

So thats how Maclaren treat their British customers. Second class citizens compared to the way they treat their American customers.

I can feel a well deserved boycott coming along!

From what I saw on the various news stories the American hinge is just the same as that on the UK buggies. It's also just the same as that on the buggy I bought over 17 years ago and used for my 2 boys. I don't understand their problem really, an article I read told of a Mom whose child jumped in the seat before it was properly opened - well duh, there's scope for injury there, I'd be horrified if I'd let that happen to my child and it would have been my fault not the buggy's. I mean not disrespect to the injured children, but I think it's more likely to be the parent's fault than the manufacturer. There is a label saying an adult should assemble and that the child should be kept away during opening/folding. If there was a big problem surely we'd have heard something a long time ago! It's probably been made such a big deal of because of the "suing" culture over there.

Also there seems to be no "recall" as such, just people who bought one are being told to contact the company to get a special "hinge cover"

    It's only a game

You assume incorrectly. They have eaten British children's fingers as well. But no recall. Well done, the British branch. The children shouldn't be so foolish in the first place.

Well, for a start it's not Maclarens fault that some parents lack the common sense to keep their children clear of the mechanism when unfolding the buggies. They're doing far more than they should feel obliged to in supplying these hinge covers to the American market.

I don't currently own a Maclaren, but the buggy I do own has a hinge very similar to that found on the Maclaren buggies, and I assume the risks are the same. If my daughter were to get her finger caught in that joint resulting in injury, then it would be MY fault for failing to supervise her properly, and nothing to do with the manufacturers.

Probably because it only needs one American customer to sue them and win, it would open the floodgates over there for many more and could cost them millions of dollars in compensation and loss of sales.

Unfortunately over here it would not happen so they come out with the stock answer that it is not necessary and they all are up to european standards.

I think its because the British aren't stupid enough to let their children collapse the buggy for them, whereas in America, its quite the norm to collapse a buggy whilst your children are in it. ;).

Is this not the same Country where a man successfully sued a motor company when he crashed his mobile home whilst leaving it in cruise control so he could make himself a Coffee. Only in America huh!!!

That story's widely been debunked as a myth, you know.......

    Couldn't agree more!

I don't own a McLaren but my Mamas & Papas buggy has a similar hinge and shock horror my two kids have all fingers still intact.
