  • That must be a relief for you. My ACER used to frighten me when it suddenly died, but it doesn't do it any more as I take precautions: I switch it off if I can feel that the area over the hard drive is very hot, and although they are called laptops it is best to use them only on desks.

Is it an ACER by any chance? They have a habit of getting overheated and switching off to cool down.

It is good advice to put PCs on a flat, hard surface and to ensure that air can circulate.

Proud owner of an acer, never had that problem at all.

If it's getting that hot then you need to get it sorted, as it will greatly shorten the life of your processor and hard drive. Switching it off just switches off the fans too, so the heat cannot be dissipated so quickly.

If you use it a lot for burning or gaming you can buy a lappie cooling base to sit it on that will help.
