Slow Start Up Acer Laptop
Comments
-
I see you are running Vista SP2, and although someone out there will doubtless try to shoot me down in flames for saying this, I cannot believe that Acer (which I use) or anyone else, is still selling machines with only 1GB of RAM. This is a very resource hungry operating system, and I think you need at least 2GB to run it properly. I bought my Acer desktop 2 years ago with 512MB of RAM, and it would not boot up or shut down properly. I now have 2GB of RAM installed (Kingston memory, simple to fit £38), and the machine has turned into a rocket ship.0

I build systems, and if i install vista the minimum memory i stick in is 3GB Vista usually uses 1.5 GB when idleing, so as soon as you start doing anything with it your maxed out on memory.
Also run a spyware / malware scan : I recomend Malware Bytes - The free version.
Check MSconfig (start run msconfig) and stop anything that isnt necessary ( most stuff can be removed without problem, leave your AV )0 -
OK, so I've re-read everything but need to go out for a while, then I will address these things. Mind you, I'm not over-enthusiastic about unticking things if I don't know what they are and in any case, why do they start up?, is it because when I've downloaded things in the past, I've failed to untick something that says "startup when starting up"?
Yes
If you have Advanced System Care downloaded click Admin Tools then Startup Manager. Right click an entry and click Online search. This will tell you what the entry is and the guide for unticking. Repeat for each application. When finished press apply and ok.0 -
Click the Start button and Type MSCONFIG in the Search Box and hit Enter.
You will get System Configuration Window. Click the Startup tab and uncheck all the programs or applications that you don’t want to automatically load every time you use your PC.
After unchecking the ones that you don’t want, Click OK. In the next window, you may choose either to restart or later and the effects would take place next time you start your PC.
Will these be the same instructions for XP please?0 -

Thanks guys, removed some of them from start up, in the msconfig there is a startup item that looks as if it is in chinese writting with the manufacturer as UNKNOWN - should I be stopping this from boting at start up - it looks suspicious to me!
I would have pasted the screen shot but dont know how to!
Thanks again :T0 -
Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM FULL SCAN then click SCAN
Post the log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds:idea:0 -
Just sat down to emabrk on unticking but chose to look at something via Bing maps (Weymouth) and noticed that the facility for viewing in 3D was not available. I've been using that for ages now, so am wondering if anything I've done of late with this Advanced System Care, might have changed something. If you feel not, how can I get the 3D feature back please. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
