Click the Start button and Type MSCONFIG in the Search Box and hit Enter.
You will get System Configuration Window. Click the Startup tab and uncheck all the programs or applications that you don’t want to automatically load every time you use your PC.

Usually, you can safely uncheck all apart from any [important]softwareapplications like Windows Defender, or any applications that you would love to have every time like a Dock.
After unchecking the ones that you don’t want, Click OK. In the next window, you may choose either to restart or later and the effects would take place next time you start your PC.

It looks like you have AVG. This is exactly why I dumped AVG.

OK, so I have to apologise for assuming a charge would be made, simply because I had clicked on the wrong button.

Now I have done it correctly and the problems found have been dealt with.

What next ? I ask myself. I will re-boot and see if I notice any difference. Then, maybe someone might suggest a course of action that needs to be followed. Does this new download do things automatically or do I have to instruct it.

On re-boot, I'm unsure if it arrived at the position of clicking Internet Explorer any quicker, but the green light became stable much much quicker, so I assume programmes which ran in the background on start-up, no longer do. I've also followed my normal route of the sites I visit every day, and I'm sure they came up quicker, mind you, it could be my imagination, only time will tell, but dont forget I need advice on the following, What next ? Install something like winpatrol that monitors things like this and will warn you when something tries to insert itself at boot time.

if its the advanced system care you are talking about island man, you dont have to set it, you can just go into it whenever you notice things slowing up and work through the various scans. Its pretty good for a free program but will only do so much. Did you manage to turn off some of the start up programs/applications? Further than that, I hope a tech head will come along and help you speed it up some more.

When I had my last laptop with 1gb of memory, I used an external harddrive to store everything on (pictures, music, photos etc), as windows vista really seems quite intensive. Perhaps either increasing your memory or storing more things on an external will help.

Not unless you made changes to startup manually. If you have Vista follow my post 13

OK, so I've re-read everything but need to go out for a while, then I will address these things. Mind you, I'm not over-enthusiastic about unticking things if I don't know what they are and in any case, why do they start up?, is it because when I've downloaded things in the past, I've failed to untick something that says "startup when starting up"?
