The MoneySaving Analogy Champagne Contest
A bit like Maureen Lipman, I've got an ology. Or to be precise an 'alogy'. Cycling to MoneySaving Towers this morning I came up with a new analogy for debts. After so many years broadcasting and writing about debt - new ones don't arrive often. As I haven't found a place for it yet, I thought I would write it here.
"Debt is like fire. Control it and use it well and its a powerful tool. Get it wrong and you can be badly burnt."

Don't worry I won't waste it, keep eyes and ears open for its use in an article or broadcast somewhere soon.
The Contest
It made me think - what other good analogies are there out there.... I thought I'd give champagne for the best one. It has to be subject specific e.g. debt, telephone bills, contact lenses, internet shopping, rather than general MoneySaving.
REMEMBER ITS NOT JUST ABOUT DEBTS IT COULD BE PHONE BILLS, SHOPPING, GAS & ELEC, PENSIONS THE WORKS!

    (with a tip o'the hat to 'I'm sorry, I haven't a clue')

Savings are like making a pot of tea. You put your money, or water, together with the tealeaves, or savings account, into a teapot. The tea works with the water to produce a healthy brew of interest. You can use many types of tealeaves, which produce slightly different types of tea, or interest. When the time comes, you pour the tea from the teapot. However, you usually find there is an annoying little drip. Martin - over to you!

in the words of swiss toni ...

paying off your debts is very much like making love to a beautiful woman, you find out her rates, make sure you transfer your balance correctly and then keep on making those deposits until you're spent

Paying off debts or a mortgage, is like trying to eat an elephant. You look at that huge elephant and say 'my god, I'll never eat all that' so you never really have the courage to get started. So there's a solution. Eat your elephant in chucnks. Get a big knife and hack a piece off. Then just concentrate on eating that. It'll be small enough so you don't feel threatened by it and you'll see the end. When it's eaten, go take the next chunk. Before you know it, the elephants all gone. (with apologies to elephants!)

Credit cards are like alcohol, used wisely they can make you feel happy, used to excess you start to feel out of control when you go over the limit, with the after effects leaving you feeling thoroughly miserable with a big headache!

    Saving is like sex.

You put your money in and take it out.

After a number of years you slowly lose interest.

And the penalty for early withdrawl is always severe!!!
    I have a cunning plan!
Proud to be dealing with my debts.
