Samsung have some great offerings namely the NC10 and the newer NC110.

    I saw somewhere online today (most likely hotukdeals) an NC10 (6 cell) f[STRIKE]rom Currys[/STRIKE] Ebuyer for £238. £209 @ Currys! ;)

You don't give a budget. Also, the RAM may be less than in your current laptop but this is typical with netbooks and they run fine. Also, you can add an extra gig if/when you need it :D

    Not from Currys, from Dixons.
  • USA and OS both have TV and DVD in the hotel / rental accommodation, (different systems..) what's the problem get a light netbook.

Extra DVD drive means an extra power supply, plug adaptor, more bits to pack and unpack....
Personally I'd go for a smaller lightweight laptop with an internal drive. Anyway, watching DVD's on a 10in netbook screen is not much fun.
If you consider the average portable dvd player is an 8" screen a 10" netbook is a god send for watching films.
A net book is still Ideal as if you want internet during the day whilst out sight seeing and having you lunch or a coffee leave the extra weight of the DVD drive in your room. But I would like to see a decent laptop with upto a 6 hour battery life weigh less than 2 kilos(combined max of netbook with optical drive extra) and not cost over £300.
Go for the samnung Netbook and splash out on a decent slimline DVD-RW drive or just go for a vanilla dvd drive for all you'll need.

  • Many many thanks for all the useful suggestions. Maybe I should ahve been clearer, on both trips I'll be staying with friends or in a villa so will not need to watch films while there so rethinking it prob the watching fils bit is not essential and I do actuallty have an external DVD drive I could take if required.
Weight ( and function ) are prob the most important things to me so Samsung looks like it fits the bill
    Thanks again

If you go the Samsung route make sure you don't buy a "deal" that comes with the 3-cell battery. Its the 6-cell batteries that give you 7 ish hours use. Some people have been tripped up on this.

Keep an eye on the Dell site, I got the Dell Mini10 in September for £249 and the spec is far higher than the average netbook.

It came with built in mobile broadband (nominally Vodafone, but as it's unlocked any simcard will work), built in digital TV Tuner, 160GB hard drive (so plenty of space for .avi ripped movies), and ideally for web browsing the HD 1366x768 resolution screen.

Its the same size as the NC10 but far superior in features.

Follow the link....Dixons via Quidco plus the £20 cashback.
  • Anyone know if a Currys highstreet store will price match against Dixions? I really want to go and pick a Samsung NC10 up in person today rather than having one delivered as won't be at home through the day due to to work.

Should do if its an in-store price too.
    http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/editorial/Price+Promise
    Currys Price Promise in store:

We’ll match the instore prices of Argos, Asda, Comet, Jessops, Tesco, John Lewis…..in fact any local retail store.

In the unlikely event that you find a cheaper price for the same product and offer in a local retail store (which has stock ready for delivery) we will not only match the competitor’s price but beat it by 10% of the difference.

Our Price Promise also applies for up to 7 days after you make your purchase.

    Good luck.
