£27 MOT at Nationwide, is there a catch?

I've just been on the Nationwide Auto Centres website and they have an offer on of half price MOT's if you book in via the web so it brings it to £27.

Has anyone used this before? Is there a catch?

I have used Nationwide once in the past and they were great, even mended a couple of things for free to get it through.

I have a 54 plate Peugeot 407 that is still under 12 month warranty from the dealer so if anything does fail I should be able to get them to sort it out which is a bonus as well.

  • If your 100% sure your car will pass.......................knowing Nationwide I bet they'll still find something wrong with your vehicle.

I would ask Peugeot to price match this.

Im sure they will, and any repairs under warranty can be done them.

I dont like these places that fit tyres, exhausts etc that carry out MOT's. I feel like they maybe fishing for work thats not needed as they always carry out a check that isnt required.

Goes something like this below, but it was renault..

Them - "Sir, your brake pads are 60% worn, would you like me to change them"

Me - "No, that means i have 40% left"

Them - "Sir, your car has advisory on its MOT, the LH Drive Shaft Gaitor has started to split

    Me - "thanks"

Then next year, local MOT place said nothing about it.

I'm 99% sure it will pass. I only bought it in July and it had a full service before I collected it and they gave me a 12 month warranty on the car as an apology for the dealer messing me about, so if there is anything wrong and it fails it'll go straight back to them.

I just saw the £27 and as money is tight enough at the moment I think I might risk it and book it in.

I have used the one in Bolton before when I worked there and a bulb went during the test which they replaced and they sorted out another small thing but they only charged me the price of the MOT. I know a bulb isn't much but Vauxhall had tried charging me £9 for one in the past.

If it did fail for anything major then i'll take it back to the dealer and get them to do it under their warranty agreement.

I'm going to spend the next week worrying i'll be getting ripped off now like I do everytime I take my car for test.

I hope I can come back with a good report and shock you all and not for a "I told you so" :D

I have always found it to be cheaper in the long run to have a MOT done in a place that does not do repairs.

You do not know what pressure is on the examiner to find work for the repair side of the business
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
  • Or you might get lucky(ish) like I did, took car into KwikFit for an MOT (some offer or other) needed a bulb and and indicator stalk and a few other bits, so failed, they priced it at approx £150. Told them to go ahead and repair then re-test, different MOT tester did it the second time and found that 2 of the jacking points were rusted through and there was some other rust damage so failed it again....

Well i wasnt impressed when they told me this, so got the area manager on the phone and queried the competence of the initial MOT tester, they then agreed to cover the cost of the repairs/welding/re-painting thinking it wouldnt cost them much......... until the bill came in at approx £250  god i was happy lol
