Car Crash Advice?

I hope the car was not bought on finance. The car scrap value will be about £500-600.
The repair price of £3500 is from a main-dealer repair shop, a local independant place using 2nd hand body parts (bumper, doors, bonnet from ebay etc) may bring it down to £2000, as your TPFT the car wont be Cat C or D, meaning that if its a good repair then the damage history wont be shown unless the next buyer notices.
I would steer clear of paying for any of the repairs, as this could be an endless moneypit.
Either way, the crash last night would of cost him maybe £3500-4000.0 -
How do you know that?Alias_Omega wrote: »

Have you seen the car? I would have thought the car is still at the recovery yard. The estimate would have no doubt come from an employee there.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Chippy,
Refering to the OP's quote above.
Marbella,
I'm sure the passenger can claim off the driver (TPFT) for any damages caused to himself. If they were to suffer from any effects.0 -
I'd bet the 3.5 k is a wild guess at the recovery yard. The OP stated the recovery vehicle was passing and has assumed this was free. No mention of the vehicle being moved to a dealer or body shop.
The OP and her son are in for one finacial shock.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Well thanks for that, everyone else is being most helpful. I can assure you he is no moron, unlike a lot of morons, at least he is insured, and also for your information TPFT was £3800 and F/Comp was £5000 hope that helps you make your mind up.Anihilator wrote: »What sort of moron insures a 7.5K third party! Thanks - Yes it is a 'pull out of the air' estimate from the recovery yard, the manager was really just trying to be helpful, he said it could be lower but was just looking at the worst case. The car is still in the recovery yard and I have been told that it is £150 + VAT for recovery and £20 per day while it is there, so we are trying to get some quick decision.Chippy_Minton wrote: »I'd bet the 3.5 k is a wild guess at the recovery yard. I did this to my first car 3 months after i learnt to drive, i had it repaired, sourced all the replacement parts from scrap dealers and had a citroen specialist repair it rather than the dealer. it cost me £900. the car only cost me 2.5k from auction but i was still devastated at havin 2 shell out. i can def recommend rebuilding it that way.
i personally think its a huge risk to insure anythin above 5k on third party only insurance, particularly if they are a new/young driver and more likely to be involved in an accident. driving a banger for the first yr or so is the best advise i was ever given! and it kept my insurance premiums as low as poss!0 -
Wow £7500 to buy the car and £3800 to insure it, he must have a good job. Combine that and your looking at the cost of the barrier repair. Not many youngsters in that position. Insurance costs like that we must be talking in the region of a VXR Corsa.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. I did tell you. See #6.
Your also facing a bill for the team that came out to assess and maybe repair the barrier last night.
Did any other emergency services attend? Unlike the police they charge for RTC's.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

I would pick out the yellow pages and start looking for a back street car & a large company repair shop.
Ask them if they can give you quotes to repair the work, and go with that. Speak to your son on how he plans to repair the car, and fund the work.
I would stump up the costs for the recovery, the storage place and have it moved asap, then leave it to himself to sort.
My mum has been stung by my little brother many times for car repairs that have been paid for, and forgotten about.
Good luck..0
