TRV Issue

Hi All

Have a query, perhaps it's an obvious question..

Last night we bled and removed a radiator. The TRV was set to zero and so locked.

We then switched the heating on and for some reason water came through the TVR when it was off. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding how TRV's work but is that supposed to happen or is it faulty?

  • it does sound like the trv is cream crackered.

as you say you shut it off and it should not leak.

you said it was set to zero, is there another setting below zero. i'm sure some have a further setting for off, like a "*" or something similiar
You got to get through what you've got to go through to get what you want but you got to know what you want to get through what you got to go through.

Thanks Canucklehead.. I remember we kept those when we had the rads fitted.

So with the cap in place, are we still able to use the central heating? Or are the caps a temporary thing while decorating for example?

    Thanks for your help.

If your removing the rad for any length of time and you want to be 100% sure of no leaks you can also cap the end of the valve with a nut and ring, small piece of pipe and a stop end. If the TRV has a union type tail piece you can remove it and fit a cap over the end of it using some ptfe tape. Some TRV's where supplied with flimsy plastic caps and overtightening them can make them spring of.

Replacing the TRV head with the plastic cap is usually used when the radiator has been removed to prevent the valve from leaking. Heating can be used with no problems and the valve should not leak.
