    This story is from 2006.

That's what you get for removing the security features from your phone so you can play SNES games on it.
  • The second story isn't from 2006 though, but I suppose iPhones are now so popular, it's worthwhile writing malicious code for them.

It only affects iPhones than have been jail-broken.

According to estimates, around 8% of iPhones are jail-broken. There are some 30 million iPhones out there, so that's 2.4 million potential targets.

To put that into perspective, Apple sold 2.6 million Macs in the last three months alone. And as we're constantly being reminded, they're apparently not worth writing viruses for.

Not sure why the iPod article was on the frontpage of the Tech section yesterday. The article says about 10% of iPhones and iPods are jailbroken, so the potential is maybe greater than no. of Macs. so your looking at 5million potential targets. Most Mac users would have some security software, where as their isn't any for the touches.

10% of all iPhones is 3 million. That's the number of iPhones sold since 2007 that have been jail-broken (if the 10% figure is correct).

Apple sold 2.6 million Macs in the last three months.

Regardless, not only does it just affect jail-broken iPhones, but it only affects jail-broken iPhones with SSH installed. And even then, it can only infect an iPhone if the user is stupid enough not to have change the default SSH password.

So, only a small percentage of that 10% will be able to be infected.

If someone removes the security features from their phone, installs software that allows remote access to the system files, and then doesn't bother to change its default password, I'm not sure what they expect.

    In what way?

Well firstly they allow the jail breaking to go on by not locking it down adequately, and secondly they dont allow people to do what they want to do on the platform forcing people to jail break their phones.
