Sony Bravaria 5 year guarantee

Last December I took advantage of the Sony promotion and purchased a Sony Bravaria TV. This include a free 5 year guarantee. Today Sony wrote to me and said the guarantee was about to expire and it was going to cost me £75.88 to renew it. Fortunately I found their original letter which confirmed the guarantee actually runs out in Dec 2013.I telephoned them about this confusion and they said the letter I had today was from another department who act for Domestic and General Insurance, even though it was on Sony headed paper. They told me that this department was nothing to do with the one that gave me the 5 year guarantee! and to ignore todays letter, which I have. However I feel I should inform you about this as I believe this is a scam. If I had not remembered that I had taken out the extended guarantee I may have been tempted to pay this extra charge. I am sure some elderly people will and that is what they are hoping for.

No scam, just another case of one hand not knowing what the other is doing. When you first bought your TV did you actually register the guarantee?

Thanks for your adult reply. Yes I did register the guarantee. Even though this is a case of one hand not knowing what the other is doing. It is still in effect a scam and some people will part with money when they don't need to.

Your claim of a "scam" isn't particularly adult !

You have said it is C**k-up, then claim Sony are doing something untoward - not even logical.

Maybe English is not your first language. I said it is in effect a scam. In other words, although it probably was not Sony's intention, the end result is the same as if it were a scam.

Not really, a scam involves somebody deceiving somebody else! Saying that Sony are defrauding people is probably not such a smart move.

Also Domestic and General are indepndant from Sony, so they are actually selling there own cover, you probably received a call because the database they were working from didnt realise that you were sold a 5 year warranty.

Inholms, your original post did not say "in effect a scam"...

So you have now softened your criticism, which of course is fine.
