McAfee or Kaspersky??

Options
All the PC's in our house (and there are many of them) are running McAfee, mainly due to the fact that we get it free through BTinternet. Up until now there have been no issues but after installing it onto my son's newly rebuilt PC at the weekend the PC is running extremely slowly and almost 100% of the CPU usage is being taken up by mcshield.exe which appears to be running continuously (which it doesn't do on any of the other PC's).

Is there a fix for this or am I better off uninstalling McAfee and installing Kaspersky which I get free through my Barclays account?

Id definitely recommend MOST anti virus programs above Mcafee

But as it happens Kaspersky is the only PAY (free in your case) one id recommend so sure, go for it

Use the MCAFEE REMOVAL TOOL though (Simply uninstalling leaves bits behind)

Kaspersky or Avira AntiVir. Given you can get Kaspersky for free I'd go for this.

    100% support this too,

Kaspersky is very good, other free ones out there are pretty reasonable too.

...tho I've been trying to get Avira to work for the last two weeks or so (refuses to update) and have just about given up on it on grounds a good but non-updating AV can leave you in a far dodgier place than an 'average' but up to date one....

(not with Barclays so have reverted to AVG.... open to suggestions tho :) )

Avira can be updated manually ~

(Not ideal I admit, I sure hope they get it sorted soon)

yes updating daily on several machines would a pain, then it wouldn't get done, then with the speed some of the nastier ones spread at these days....

The only 100% effective fix for the heap of trash called McAfee is to dump it.

Kaspersky's good if, as you say, you can get it free. I use Avira (free), and it's automatically updating just fine (also on three machines).
