FloGas - can they cut off my elderly neighbour?

I live on a small estate with a metred communal LPG tank, with FloGas as the supplier. The tank has been in place for quite a few years, and up to now, none of the householders has had a contract with FloGas. Now that the Competition Commission has changed the rules and made it possible for metred estates to switch supplier, FloGas has written to everyone asking them to sign a 2-year agreement.

I got so fed up with being ripped off by FloGas, I ripped the system out and replaced it with an air source heat pump, but one of my neighbours is 90 and very nearly blind and is worried about what to do. The letter implies that if he doesn't sign, he will be cut off. If he does sign, they will give him a price cut until April, but as usual, the contract terms look pretty onerous, and he doesn't want to tie himself in for 2 years, especially at his age.

So can anyone help? Can he refuse to sign and continue to receive gas?

  • I don't live on an estate with a shared gas supply like yours but we have our own gas tank & are supplied by Flogas. We've been receiving these contract letters for ages now including ones offering us £100 cash if we sign. Whether it's the right or wrong thing to do we just bin the letters as we don't want to be tied to them incase we do decide to switch supplier. We've never had anything ressembling a threat from them because we have not signed their letters.
I have the simplest tastes. I am always satisfied with the best.
