You're already living together so why bother spending a fortune getting married?
Remember - wedding dress makers, jewellers, florists, photographers and caterers thrive on the myth of the "special day".If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
just wanted to add my 2p. we just spent about 20k on our wedding and about 6k on honeymoon. some of that was from our parents but more than half was our savings. We still had quite a bit of savings left afterwards. I would add that we had 150 guests and got married in the home counties, which partially explains the high cost! I know many on these boards will think we are silly spending this much. But.
We're now buying a house. if we had a cheaper wedding we could have a lower mortgage rate but we don't regret a penny we spent on our wedding. we had everything we wanted, at the best value, i researched everything so thoroughly, we didn't waste anything. For us, our wedding was amazing, a totally perfect day - yes just one day and the marriage is forever, but still, it was a lovely memorable day and i still think of it every single day, 4m on!!!
however, I would add that we don't have any debts and have very secure jobs. it's so difficult!!0 -
I would prefer to get married first and then embark on life-long and binding joint projects such as house or children. If I am not married to the man I live with then he is not my husband and not my other half as yet so I would never think about buying a house, let alone having children with him.
But then that's me and I suspect that this position is getting covered more and more in dust nowadays.
As for the OP, if being married IS important to you - and I mean being married than having a wedding - then you should go for it. Partnership is fine for some people but it makes others uncomfortable, if long-term. So it's all down to your values. If you want marriage then definitely schedule it for some foreseeable future and work towards your goal. If you want to be married you need a wedding and if you need a wedding, then how to make it cheap but still beautiful - that's another issue.
If marriage is not crucial in your view and you are happy with your relationship then you don't even need to work it into your equation. Save for the house, buy it and then eventually you will get round to getting married, when you have both desire and funds.0
