Like a snake charmer the apple store has me hypnotised. I need an external hard drive for my laptop and was convincing myself that if I was going to spend 85 quid on one then I might as well spend an extra 140 quid and get a 60gb ipod instead.
What would you do? I want to buy it, but my MSE conscience is butting in.
If you've got any reasons to buy it/not buy it please tell me.
Before you convinced me to not going abroad cos of the money so I hope someone can help on this one! :A

Hang on! You've got me confused!
First you say you NEED an external hard drive for your computer!
But then you say you might aswell spend over £200 on an ipod that will hold more songs than actually exist!

eekk.. you sound like my boyfriend!
He too gets mesmerised by the appley goodness from the white castle and simply cant leave without something!
thank god an actual apple store does not exist too close to us! His granny did think him most strange when he explained how he likes to spend hours fiddling around in john lewis with all the different 'things'!
I'm afraid i'd not be a very good role model on this one anyway, as I have 3 ipods (from my pre-mse days) :rolleyes:0 -
Sorry... that wasn't the kick up the @rse u wanted was it!
DO NOT BUY IT YOU DO NOT NEED IT! SING INSTEAD! ITS FREE!:rotfl:0 -
I can't really say anything because I've got three laptops - all in perfect condition. The last is top of the range, 1GB ram and all that.
OK I have no debts, but still.
And what do you do with more than one ipod anyway? STOP STOP STOP...Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -

Well I need to backup my files/music and don't have an external hard drive. Plus I could put all my CDs onto it and not have to ship them home from Japan when I move in a couple of months. Lol, listen to me trying to convince myself!
Is there a cheap way to back up? Sorry not very computer literate...
also I heard that ipods often break after a couple of years so wouldn't I also have to back up the ipod somewhere else?!0 -

Sorry hun, I didn't mean to be insensitive
But there was a time when I was £6000 in debt, but MSE didn't exist yet...:( Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -

i'm sorry to be blunt but is this not the sort of stupid spending that got you into debt? if you can afford £200+ towards an ipod perhaps you could pay it off your debts instead!!0

I first have to confess that I do have an i-pod which I like very much - but I did buy it for very few quid from my boyfriend who then bought the latest new one..
BUT..... I think that in the end it would be MASSIVELY cheaper to buy a separate external hard-drive and some kind of non-apple MP3-player alternative.
I know it's easy to fall for all that lovely apple design, marketing, advertising but that's why you're here on this site!!!!! So you don't fall for it!!!!
Also I would try to get some more in depth technical advice (I'm also not fully computer-wise)
You say that you have a lap-top - is it that you're not bringing this back with you from Japan? Because if you are then your music will be on this lap-top as well as the i-pod, so you would have a back up if the i-pod broke.
Are you parting with all your cd's??? (I could never do this I think!) If you are storing them somewhere then you will also have this back-up.
I've got all my cd's, got loads of them as imported files on laptop, got them on the i-pod - can't see how you'd need more back up than this!
One thing to bear in mind is that you can't transfer your music files from your i-pod to another computer (I'm pretty sure........) Maybe an external hard-drive would be able to, best check things out.
Also have you tried any of the other boards - I think there is a shopping one and the "I-wanna" - this could lead to some specific advice
