I enjoy exploring new places and cultures, before escaping back to the comfort of my own home. If I couldn't afford to travel, I'd probably learn by reading books & watching films based upon real events. However, it's no substitute for actually seeing a place for oneself.

I have been fortunate to visit other countries at a companies expense. We do have a holiday most years but it`s no big deal if we don`t. We live by the sea and my mate has a pub just 20 miles away. This year we didn`t want to go abroad so we drove the 20 odd miles to my buddies pub and had 4 nights there.

Might go to Malta after Christmas but will see.

    Very good thread ...
It's got everybody opening up ...Amazing how many difernt ways there are to get to the same result ..

Pastures ..I recon you should go ..Just take a small frame about 12 inches square with you and when it all gets too much you can look at the world through that and pretend you are watching it all on the internet :)

PN has a real life too, she's just disciplined about sharing it, IMO.

I think that might be the best advice you will ever get.

You can suffer it here, you can learn to tolerate it elsewhere.

    Genius. I should do that.
The only time I go out is to pick up more cigs from the garage round the corner, or a quick run to the chippy.

I'd get served quick with a frame, everybody'd have me down as a loony.
  • As a student, I'm not sure I could afford to take any more than a week off work, let alone pay to go abroad and hotels etc! If I do go this year it'll be cheap flights to Vienna to stay with a friend, or walking boots and a tent, with a bigggggggggg backpack! A change is the main thing for me, and I get that by going home in the uni holidays and back to uni for term time :)

Another thing I'd like to throw into the ring in reply to those who say holidays are not essential, is perhaps that depends on your existing everyday lifestyle?

Those of us with well balanced lives and a good support network may not feel in need of a break therefore classing a holiday as a luxury, whereas those who have high levels of day to day stress and no support to speak of may need a break more, in order to remain functioning normally? In that case, it would be classed as an essential?

I'm talking in terms of holiday = break from day to day routine, change of scene etc rather than holiday = sun, beach, abroad etc.

I think everyone benefits from a break from routine. But it doesn't have to be a holiday - it can be a week spent doing all the things locally there usually isn't time for.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
