How essential are holidays?

I 'need' Winter sun and I'm looking forward to two weeks very soon.
This afternoon I have booked a hire car, meet 'n' greet car parking and a bucketful of euros. Then I looked at the flight options for next March. Just booking stuff gave me a lift - much more effective than the happy pills.

Yeah, me too. It's the only thing that gets me through the hibernation season!I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
I used to have around 4 holidays a year 9America, Canada, Australia as well as Europe) when I could afford to. Now I can't, so I don't. Sometimes I think it would be nice, but the debt wouldn't be.
I think it's important to have breaks, so I just take a week off work now and then, stay at home in my pyjamas all day and read books. I feel every bit as relaxed after a week of that!
What a great post. That's kinda what I was trying to say: if you have time off and do different stuff, get a change of scenery etc. then it's good for you. Doesn't need to be a £4k janut to Australia.
We've taken two days off before and spent the time in our home city, going to museums, art gallaries, restuarants and cafes we've never been to or as you said, just spend the morning in bed drinking tea, reading the paper and eating toast. It's ace.0 -
Come with us next year PN. I would love another adult along.
We went to New York this year.
Now the brat is older, I tell her our budget and she picks our destination and does all the research and booking over the internet.
All you have to do is turn up. She organises everything else to an inch.
Sounds good... but you wouldn't be pulling any men would you? It's just you're quite scarey/full on sometimes here ... scares me reading it, I'd be mortified watching it

I get out in the hills every other weekend in the Highlands.
A wee holiday every fortnight.
In the summer the weather can be fantastic.
These feel like lots of very good wee holidays to me.
In saying that I do plan to get away next year for 10 to 14 days. Probably somewhere with some guaranteed good weather and a bit of culture.
That is if my finances stay sound. I would not consider going away on holiday if it were to have any major effect on my financial stability.0 -

I have never pulled a man in my puff.
And if I had the slightest inclination it wouldn't be anywhere near my daughter.
Full on? What does that mean?
We went to New York, got to the hotel. The brat had booked a room overlooking Central Park. Inevitably we didn't get one.
!!!!!! did it matter? We live in the country, it as not as though we long for greenery.
She poked and she prodded and I wouldn't do anything and she was disgusted with me.
She ended up literally dragging me down to the desk and forcing me to demand a better room.
The receptionist seemed to feel for me.
Honestly, define full on.Retail is the only therapy that works0 -

I love that someone else made the bed as well as I do (poor DH tries, but have bed and bedlinen fixation he just doesn't get). I like funny little bottles of shampoo (which I never use). I like that some one cleans when you go out. I like breakfast that someone else prepares and does washing up for. I love that my clothes don't have pet hair or half a field on them without me noticing.
I do howver worry about the animals terribly, and miss the cats in bed at night and i worry that everything won't be ok at home. a few days.
Goodness that could have been written by me! :rotfl:
I have been lucky enough to win both a wonderful two weeks in a hotel in France and a wonderfully luxurious country house hotel break this year. I loved the whole experience, but missed the cats a lot.0 -
I think that holidays are essential - but this doesn't necessarily mean travel. As an earlier poster said - it's the change from the norm that can be most relaxing.
Having said that, I spend a large percentage of my earnings on traveling, and I like to splurge on hotels.:o:o:o Not very MSE, but memories do last forever. Luckily I'm managing to save, pay off debts and travel at the moment. And I do of course go through cashback sites etc as much as possible;)
Save me from spending...

A holiday is essential to me but by that I mean a break from work, this summer I spent a week in Egypt diving, the previous three years I hadn't left the country but had enjoyed several weekend/mid week trips to other places around the UK usually booked no more than a week before I want to travel and travelled on my own.
Next year I'm hoping my OH and I can travel to my mums holiday apartment for a week and then back to odd two or three night trips away - hopefully I'll get up to Scotland as I've not been up there since I moved away three years ago. It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.
