What constitutes a download?

According to the good folks who rate their ISPs on DSLZone the only two ISPs that BT beat are Virgin ADSL and KarooExactly!
So it looks like I'll have to upgrade to an unlimited plan, which I begrudge doing as BT is expensive enough as it is. But the bad reviews I have read about cheaper IPS's has put me off moving again. Better the devil you know, I suppose. I think I'll ask my son to stump up the extra fiver! Thanks to everyone who replied :T

Still better the devil you know eh?0 -
Xbox live eats up the data allowance, everytime your son speaks during a game that's data, and the conversations from the other people coming down the line to him, that's data too. I was checking our usage during the summer holidays and while I was on the internet browsing and checking MSE etc for a few hours, not viewing video or "downloading" anything, we'd used nearly 4 Gb over about 10 hours during that day. The culprits - 2 teens on xbox live! Good job I have unlimited download allowance, phew!
It's only a game

uploaded data (stuff sent to the internet) is also comes out of the download (data usage) allowance. While upload speeds are lower than download speeds, certain products can still upload a lot of data.0

I just had a quick look on DSLZone, and I'm now thinking about saying goodbye to BT. I'll have a better look when I have more time. Thanks again for all the help.0

Just to clarify - many ISPs do NOT count upload towards the allowanceJohalaReewi wrote: »uploaded data (stuff sent to the internet) is also comes out of the download (data usage) allowance.Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -
But as the OP mentioned some do. Usually stuff like this is squirrelled away in the T&C in such a way that you can't find it until you fall foul of it.DatabaseError wrote: »Just to clarify - many ISPs do NOT count upload towards the allowance0 -
Thanks for that. I will change the router password, etc. But can you tell me, would it be due to my son playing X Box Live, or watching clips on real player? He reckons not, but I'm not so sure!
LOL..................................
You answered your own question. Definitely! Definitely due to the xbox live. Clips also.
If you plan to do this, get at least 40gb download cap limit.
BT must be raking money in from you!Motto: 'If you don't ask, you don't get!!'
Remember to say thank you to people who help you out!
Also, thank you to people who help me out.0 -
OP, if you are going to stay with BT, switch to Option 3, which gives you unlimited data usage (subject to FUP) for another tenner. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Download is every bit of data that comes down the line and into your computer, Xbox, Wii etc whether you store it or not. Xbox Live will use a huge amount of bandwidth and that will certainly be contributing to the problem here0

Part of the problem is lying sales staff - BT told me only last week that watching iPlayer online isn't downloading!!
I was also told 'streaming' doesn't count towards the limit, so watching 'you tube' or playing games on the internet didn't count. Thank goodness I haven't handed over the MAC code, and it was all completed over the phone on Friday, so according to distance selling I can cancel within 14 days and don't need to proceed.
I found out what counted when I looked at the terms and conditions on the internet after the sales call - what a bunch of fibbers they are- I was even put through to the 'broadband team' to clarify
I'm luck in that I have a very old 'unlimited' package, no longer available, so I think I will stay where I am, even though the speed isn't always sparkling!0
