McDonalds fry boxes are very good. Banana boxes from Morissons aren't bad for some items

Oh just remembered a useful tip I read on here which I thought I would pass on again.

When packing, don't only label each box with the room name, also give it a number.

    This has 2 main advantages:

    1. You can maintain an easily searchable spreadsheet with contents organised by box number. You can be as specific or generic as you like, you know which things needs a special mention as you pack. It's a godsend when you come to unpacking and desperately want a particular thing!

    2. The things you pack last, are naturally the things you need most, so leave till the end to pack. You will need these things FIRST in the new house. By numbering boxes, you know to unpack the highest numbers first. Faced with 25 kitchen boxes, it's easy to see which ones to set your sights on first.

We did this and found it REALLY helpful, I wish I knew who posted it originally but I am very thankful to them!

Take the kettle, cups, tea, coffee, sugar, spoons etc. in a box on the back seat of your car and make sure you have enough cups for the removal men too!

Our local Morrisons always have plenty of very strong banana boxes. These are brilliant for kitchenware that can sometimes be heavy so needs to be packed in smaller boxes. Just be aware of the 'hole' in the top and bottom. They stack well too and can cope with quite a few boxes stacked on top of them.

I'm sure a supermarket near you will have loads if you give them a ring.

ETA: When we moved house I got a pack of coloured paper to print out box labels and used one colour for each room, e.g. kitchen all box labels red. daughter's boxes pink labels. It worked well for us and our removal firm.

+1 for Banana Boxes. The hole in the bottom is usually not a problem if the sheet of card is inside, problem on top is sorted with newspaper. Handles at the sides are great too.
  • Cracking idea Socks...you sound like an old hand at this! :D

I ended up getting 25 strong boxes for £15, with bubblewrap and strong tape included. Might be a bit of a rip, but they're the perfect size and will do for long-ish term storage, so well worth it.

Thanks for all the replies folks!
  • We are getting packing boxes from Safestore, they are a bit of a ripoff compared to some of the online places, but you can use Tesco clubcard vouchers there, so our £60 "moving pack" is only costing us £15 in vouchers (which we struggle to use anyway!)

Try Freecycle. People are always putting their removal boxes on there.

When we moved, daughter, who was manager at a M & S Simply Food got us a never ending supply of banana boxes - great. Strong and a reasonable size.
