Packing Boxes...

(Hope this is in the right place)

Where is the cheapest place to get packing boxes from? The last time i moved house, i got them from Ebay, but when they arrived, they were a different size that advertised (tho still usable) and some of them were split...luckily i didn't need them all!

Because of the mistake with the sizes (which was probably my fault entirely), i'm not sure what size to get this time. They need to be easily stackable...i've got things stored at a friend's house, but i moved from a house, to a caravan (hence the stuff stored at a 'friends's) and now i'm moving into a shared house. I think i'll need about 15 max. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm near Sheffield, if that helps at all!

Thanks :)

i dont know if they are the cheapest, but we have used mad4boxes several times and they are very good.

we have struggled to get boxes from supermarkets as they seem to use fewer of the big ones and collapse as they unpack and stack them in cages

  • Mad4boxes aren't the strongest of boxes very flimsy IMO.

The big yellow self storage company always seem to have huge banners waving outside proudly claiming "We don't just sell boxes".

They are absolutely right, they also sell Packing tape & bubble-wrap.

Never bought boxes...always scrounged them. Boxes we used to move house all came from clothes shop where my mother-in-law works. Boxes used by clothes stores tend to be quite substantial with 3 ply cardboard. When we finished with them they went back to the shop to go in their recycling skip - though some i kept and use to store my DIY stuff.

Don't get too large a boxes though as then they become impossible to lift - especially if you fill them with books. Another tip is to make sure you label your boxes with the destination room (label doors at destination to avoid bedroom numbering confusions!) and contents - write on the box itself rather than using labels that sometimes fall off.

Our local McDonald's was very happy to let us have as many boxes as we needed earlier this year. They keep them flat in a container outside and sorted the best ones out for us. The size is limited, but TBH, once I packed one full of books I could hardly lift it, so bigger boxes wouldn't have been better. All we had to do is put them back up with parcel tape. They were very sturdy and afterwards we just flattened them again and took them to the recycling site.

    Hope this helps.

I find supermarket boxes very flimsy and not at all suitable for heavier items

Its worth buying them or asking removal company if they provide them

I know argos sell them but not sure how good they are

Our local Morrisons always have plenty of very strong banana boxes. These are brilliant for kitchenware that can sometimes be heavy so needs to be packed in smaller boxes. Just be aware of the 'hole' in the top and bottom. They stack well too and can cope with quite a few boxes stacked on top of them.

I'm sure a supermarket near you will have loads if you give them a ring.

ETA: When we moved house I got a pack of coloured paper to print out box labels and used one colour for each room, e.g. kitchen all box labels red. daughter's boxes pink labels. It worked well for us and our removal firm.

When we moved house, our packing boxes were made up from a mixture of:

    1. http://www.a1box.co.uk/. Seemed cheapest at the time, very happy with the boxes, very sturdy and easy to put together.

    2. Boxes from supermarkets - although only a few. Found Asda, Sainsbury's, Tesco were hopeless, no help at all. But Booths were fantastic, only too pleased to help and even set some aside for us to pop in and collect.

    3. Boxes we'd collected over the previous year from parcels arriving in the post.

Even still, we only just had enough boxes when the time came!! Good luck
