Try NTL Telewest Freeview Topup TV

You can always get more with a kind word and a 2-by-4 than with just a kind word.

Check on the ntl (https://www.ntl.com) or Telewest (https://www.telewest.co.uk) site to see if you are in their areas, they will have the closest choice of channels from what you are used to at Sky (although they probably lack some of the shopping channels)

Other than that, freeview (https://www.freeview.co.uk) will be your next best bet with or without the extra channels provided by top-up tv (https://www.topuptv.co.uk)

Also if freeview is available ( according to website, we are), can we expect decent reception or will we need to change our aerial as it's quite an old one. we can't get channel 5.

Trouble is we can't get a signal at the moment so can't get any channel at all. Can't tell if it is the box that is the problem. if I took the box to my parents who have basic sky ( we have sky plus), would I be able to swap boxes to check if mine is a problem ie would their card work in my box?

No each card is for a particular box.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

but yes you will be able to check if the box works as the card is not required to see if you have a signal

Try this site to see what sort of signal you may expect.

You may need to pay for an aerial upgrade which can work out quite expensive if you need someone to fit it professionally. If you can do it yourself, you can prob. pick up a decent aerial from Argos for £50.
