Your looking at the wrong things

Both Avira and security essentials scan 'on the fly'

This isnt wise and can actually make your computer LESS safe as one can conflict with the other

  • Thanks RIK. I have chosen to disable Avira and run only MSEss.
So far, not had much trouble with the stuttering, I guess you were right. Thanks.

However, I dunno if this is related, but since disabling Antivir, I have had 2-3 instances of Internet explorer shutdowns with a DEP error message (data execution prevention). I've read up on it and realise it's a Windows security feature.
I never had any such problems till I uninstalled Avira. Could it be related?

    Thanks for your (expert) help!

Avira doesnt integrate with IE in any way so id guess its just a coincidence

  • Hello guys,

Problems have re-surfaced. Now audio seems to be the main culprit. Stutters much more than video which either stops or lags briefly.

    Current setup -

MSSec Essenstials - antivirus and antispyware; Zonealarm Firewall and Winpatrol.

    Removed Avira completely.

Restarting the laptop seems to help but wondering if I can sort it without that?

    Thanks.

One other thing you might like to check is on the laptop makers "support and downloads" site, to see if their latest motherboard chipset drivers are more recent than you have.

I've seen a couple of instances in the past of sudden high CPU usage which was cured by installing the latest drivers for the graphics. It's hard to explain ~why~ the older drivers should suddenly stop working properly, though - the only explanation we could come up with was that an MS update broke the older ones...
